DISTRIBUTION AND COLLECTION SYSTEM OPERATOR II - 4 POSITIONS AVAILABLE

WORK LOCATION - BARTOW AND DAVENPORT, FL 

PG 8 - $17.19HR./$35,755.20 ANNUALLY

The Utilities Division is responsible for public health and safety, as well as safeguarding the environment, by providing crucial safe water and wastewater services.  This position is part of the team that provides services necessary for human health, economic stability, and overall societal well-being. At the core of the mission of providing these services includes commitment to providing excellent customer service to our citizens, business partners, regulatory agencies, and other county divisions. 


MAJOR FUNCTION: Intermediate work in the operation and maintenance, installation and repair of utility mains and appurtenances.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES:

Repairs broken water lines. Installs and repairs fire hydrants. Installs and sets water meters. Taps water lines, installs water mains, locates and repairs sewer lines. Checks out complaints. Stocks service vehicles with inventory and supplies. Emergency operation as necessary of backhoe, sewer cleaning equipment. Does routine maintenance and minor repairs on all the Division's equipment.

 

Performs duties as Utilities Service Worker I in the daily routine if required. Maintenance and installation of utility mains and facilities as required. May direct and oversee the work of others as required. Performs related duties as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

Knowledge of the materials, methods, practices and equipment used in pipe fitting and is skilled in their use. Knowledge of the installation and repair of the water and sewer utility facilities. Ability to understand and work from sketches, maps, and blueprints. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 

 

Sufficient physical strength and agility to perform various job duties in all weather conditions including lifting and/or interacting with job related appurtenances and equipment weighing no more than forty-five (45) pounds. Ability to see colors. perform tasks that require eye and hand coordination. work independently, drive, bend, stoop, sit and stand for varying period of times. Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.

 

Cleaning, swabbing and air purging (ARV) existing water mains, installing, tapping, repairing/replacing, pressure testing or disinfecting water main and appurtenances (including fittings, valves, and hydrants) operating or adjusting control valves as necessary to regulate water distribution system flows or pressures.  Evaluating and interpreting water quality measurements in water distribution systems and troubleshooting to determine causes of water quality complaints.

 

Flushing water mains; installing or repairing/replacing water service lines and appurtenances (including fittings, valves and meters) testing and maintaining meters; locating and marking meters mains or service lines. Operating or exercising isolation valves on water, sewer and reuse systems. Testing and maintaining fire hydrants, repairing/overhauling control valves and hydrants. Performing water quality measurements in water distribution systems; reading blueprints and updating GIS information.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of one (1) year experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of water distribution and sewer collection facilities. Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment.

Must have appropriate water distribution license or obtain within (24) months of hire date. Rule 62-699 by the FDEP.

 

A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have a home telephone at the time of employment, as employee is subject to call out to assist in emergencies.

This position shall be required to report for work as directed when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
