Position: Senior Clinical Engineer, Equipment Planning

Location: Hybrid - Danville, PA area

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for preparing technology assessments for clinical equipment; the assigned service life represents the wear and tear and technical or commercial obsolescence of the assets along with its (AHA) estimated useful life. Analyzes and responds to user requested new development and system modifications. Design technical solutions to clinical equipment problems. Performs technical tasks related to project completion, including problem analysis, program development, testing, documentation and implementation. Perform project management and coordination functions. Provides and promotes a technical environment which will maximize the productivity of the clinical technology planning team while minimizing cost and organizational impact.

Perform duties to support the goals and objectives of Geisinger Health System in its efforts to provide quality patient care and patient satisfaction.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide managers with fast and responsive support for medical equipment, equipment planning and building systems.
  • Independently handles complex, multiple projects.
  • Responsible for year-out requirements for forecasting, programming and planning of all major medical technology capital requirements.
  • Develop detailed conceptual and feasibility studies for specific medical technology initiatives. Provide project management leadership to determine the viability, costs, benefits and timeline of current technology in place versus proposed projects.
  • Perform planning in coordination with clinical leadership and all planning functions, including strategic, clinical, space, infrastructure/building systems, telecommunications, information technology, purchasing, finance and medical equipment replacement planning. Coordinate planning with key decision management committees of the organization.
  • Develop conceptual option analysis leading to a preferred solution. Review consultant concepts for new initiatives. Identify risks and benefits of initiatives. Develop criteria agreed upon and used by leadership for evaluating, prioritizing and approving initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain current access to expert knowledge of evolving and emerging medical technologies and provide consultation to clinicians and leadership.
  • Provide customized reports that guide and facilitate prudent clinical equipment planning decisions. These reports include comparisons of technical features, flexibility, user experience, available options, maintenance requirements, technology life-cycle status, and impact on design, operations and staffing.
  • Participate in the evaluation of new clinical hardware and software products and upgrades.
  • Provide technical oversight and support for setup and implementation of interfaces between the assigned systems and required peripheral instruments, monitors, or other information system platforms.
  • Evaluate software packages related to assigned duties and make recommendations to management pertaining to acquisition and use.
  • Attend user meetings and coordinate vital equipment information among architectural, clinical, planning, biomedical engineering administrative, facility, engineering and construction staff.
  • Integrate clinical and operational needs with design concepts and technology trends to determine the optimum equipment mix.
  • Work closely with architects and engineers to coordinate space and utility requirements.
  • Serve as a liaison to vendor support personnel as needed by CE personnel.
  • Facilitates and assists in determining and implementing programs and procedures, to analyze resource utilization and support planning activities.
  • Lead staff meetings to facilitate technical and administrative knowledge sharing.
  • In conjunction with management, develop budget for area of responsibility.
  • Prepare project plans and estimates as necessary.
  • Work with clinical engineering management to develop and implement strategies.
  • Keep current on new technology developments in hardware, software and techniques of the industry.
  • Establish and maintain a technical library of resource materials. Utilize, keep current, and control the distribution of manuals and updates to ensure prudent clinical technology purchasing. Facilitate online documentation where possible to avoid creating hardcopies.
  • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of departmental and service line business processes and workflows.
  • Maintain high level of clinical engineering technical expertise.
  • Develop skills and mentor other technical staff where applicable.
  • Maintain individual work schedule and submit progress reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of imaging equipment, including radiographic, fluoroscopic, Magnetic residence imaging (MRI), ultrasound and a wide variety of biomedical and laboratory equipment.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, compliance methods, clinical engineering services, current medical technology, clinical purpose, proper operating procedures, maintenance requirements and risks associated with use of medical devices.
  • Must possess the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize needs, and the ability to perform tedious work with attention to detail.
  • Ability to understand contract language and create structured financial analyses.
  • Interacts in a professional manner with all client staff, managers and co-workers.
  • Demonstrates effective workload management.
  • Demonstrates effective skills in leadership, diplomacy, communication, negotiation and creativity.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • B.S. degree in biomedical, clinical, electrical engineering or equivalent experience. M.S. degree preferred.
  • Must have at least 10 years (or 7 years with Master's degree) clinical engineering experience with advanced, cutting-edge laboratory, imaging and biomedical equipment in a multi-hospital health system, or a large hospital with multiple clinical specialties.
  • Certified Clinical or Professional Engineer is strongly desired.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position is based out of Danville or Wilkes-Barre, PA. Frequent travel throughout the Geisinger service area is required. Travel to other locations outside of Geisinger may be required at times.
