POSITION SUMMARY:
Assists the director with ensuring the effective planning, coordinating and utilizing department personnel to address the operational activities of the department. Provides leadership and operational oversight of daily activities. Will serve as the EMS Departments Training Officer and will oversee training for EMS personnel, compliance with the Kansas Board of EMS continuing education requirements and various training courses for all EMS personnel. Ensures compliance with the different federal, state and local laws/regulations. Leads and provides coaching to the staff to achieve quality outcomes in patient care. Provides leadership in the department's education, quality and risk management program. Will occasionally provide direct patient care within their scope of practice.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assists the director in continuously assessing and improving the department performance in conjunction with improvement, quality, patient safety, risk management and patient satisfaction programs;
- Regularly reviews/audits EMR for compliance;
- Adheres to HIPPA rules and regulations;
- Coordinates and integrates services within own department and with other departments in accordance with the hospital's and emergency services primary functions;
- Directs, develops and participates in activities that ensure the competency and professional development of staff;
- Responsible for operating within the budgetary guidelines that are created and instituted for the department. Participates in activities that the support the provision and coordination of patient education;
- Provides effective leadership that communicates philosophy, objectives, goals,
- mission, vision and plans for improvement and growth to all employees;
- Remains competent as a Paramedic and participates in patient care as needed;
- Ability to respond back to work during non-business hours to provide additional staff support as a result of high call volumes or hospital emergency situations;
- Maintains a positive and professional relationship with local emergency service providers, hospital administration, and with physicians and other health care providers;
- Ensures that employees continuously meet and maintain the required qualifications, certifications, and competence required for staff members who provide care, treatment, and services;
- Is knowledgeable and a resource for current emergency medical practices within the healthcare and emergency services industry;
- Supports the Staff Development Specialist in implementing didactic and practical training programs along with monthly continuing education programs;
- Will provide oversight/training for all the training programs within Pottawatomie County EMS;
- May perform other duties as assigned or requested.
MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITES:
Directly supervises employees in the department. Assists department director with interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; coaching, mentoring, and developing employees; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and/or Experience
- State of Kansas certified Paramedic licensure required upon date of hire.
- Bachelors in a related field is preferred
- Seven years’ experience in EMS and five years’ experience as a Paramedic is preferred
- Five years of progressive leadership/supervisory experience is preferred

- Ability to plan, control and coordinate all administrative duties to ensure successful operation of their area of responsibility.
- Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Current license to practice as a Paramedic certification in the State of Kansas Required upon date of hire and throughout employment.
- BLS required upon hire
- ACLS and PALS/EPC/PEPP (within 6 months of hire)
- ACLS and PALS/EPC instructor status (within 12 months of hire)
- NIMS/ICS training command level per agencies guidelines training required within 6 months of hire.
- Kansas Training Officer Certification required within 6 months of hire.

- Must be able to effectively work under stress and coordinate several activities simultaneously.
Working Conditions:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to blood, body fluids, fumes, or airborne particles, and sharp objects potentially contaminated with blood borne pathogens or other infectious agents.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Working environment may quickly change from an office setting, to an indoor acute care clinical setting or to an uncontrolled, unpredictable pre-hospital setting.
- May be exposed to patients with communicable diseases. Wears personal protective equipment as needed.
