About the role

The permanent full-time or part-time Bereavement Counsellor will provide specialist bereavement counselling for family members and carers known to or living within Northern Sydney LHD, following a death. You will run psycho-educational and bereavement support groups within Northern Sydney LHD and provide consultation and education to multidisciplinary staff within Northern Sydney LHD and the wider community.

You will participate as a member of the multi-disciplinary team to identify clients and families at risk of complex, traumatic, or prolonged grief who may benefit from bereavement counselling or referrals to mental health services and other relevant services.

Bereavement counsellors provide outpatient sessions at sites across the LHD (e.g. Neringah Hospital, Northern Beaches CPC, Greenwich Hospital).

HammondCare is a NSW Health-affiliated organisation all NSW Health transferrable entitlements will be recognised.
 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and treat individuals, couples, and families with a high standard of professional practice, maintaining the ethics and standards of HammondCare and the relevant professional body (according to qualifications).

  • Contribute to clients' care as part of a multidisciplinary team and maintain effective communication with medical, nursing, allied health, pastoral care, other staff, and volunteers.

  • In consultation with the Bereavement Service Team Leader, assess and provide information, education, support, and counselling to clients and their family and carers

  • Ensure a high standard of professional practice, maintaining the ethics and standards of HammondCare and the relevant professional body (according to qualifications).

  • Ensure community resources and services information is available to clients and their families, carers, and other health workers.

  • Ensure a comprehensive assessment of all clients is conducted and documented

  • Facilitate the running of. bereavement support groups as appropriate

  • Respect and maintain clients' confidentiality and privacy.

  • Ensure continuity of care by obtaining relevant information and treatment directions from previous counsellors, and by passing such information to subsequent counsellors by discharge summary and other means as appropriate.

  • Facilitate smooth discharge to other services for clients requiring additional support       

About you

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications as Clinical or Counselling Psychologist, Professional Counsellor/Psychotherapist, Social Work (Accredited Mental Health), and membership of an appropriate professional body.

  • Extensive experience as a counselling clinician in bereavement for individuals, couples, and families.

  • Specialist knowledge of bereavement, trauma counselling interventions, and risk management of complex grief presentations.

  • Proven ability to work independently and autonomously with minimum direct supervision, apply sound professional knowledge and judgement, exercise advanced reasoning skills, and manage complex cases effectively.

  • Demonstrated capacity to provide psychoeducational groups and training to health professionals in the areas of grief, loss, and bereavement.

  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively as a member of an interdisciplinary team, which may include participation in quality improvement, evaluation, or research.

  • High level of communication, negotiation, liaison, advocacy, and conflict resolution skills.

  • Excellent computer and data management skills and current driver's licence (NSW eligibility).          

  • Post-graduate tertiary qualifications related to counselling are desirable.
