This employment opportunity is restricted to residents of Iqaluit only.
Reporting to the Supervisor, Food Services, the QGH Cook provides food services for hospital cafeteria and patients within established guidelines, and according to the food safety standards for healthcare settings. The incumbent ensures that the food production is done according to food safe practice guidelines as determined by the Food Safety Code of Practice for Canada’s Foodservice Industry. The Cook also ensures that food service and facilities are presented to the general public in a way that is representative of a Hospital that meets Accreditation Council Standards.
Responsibilities
The Cook is responsible for preparing all foods to be served to patients and at the cafeteria, using safe food practices. The Cook is also responsible for the accuracy of patient trays and must be highly familiar with the existing therapeutic diet orders and allergen risks. The position may also be required to deliver foods to the patients during times of staff shortages.
Qualifications
The knowledge, skills, and experience required for this job are usually obtained through completion of a cooking certificate at a culinary school or “Red Seal” certification along with at least five (5) years cooking experience. A Food Safe Certificate or the willingness to achieve one during employment is also required. Experience in a health care institution or equivalent setting is an asset. Experience in a hotel or other tourism food service establishment is also an asset. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
