The Scientist, Genome Engineering, will contribute to the development and optimization of genome engineering workflows, with a focus on molecular biology, editing technology innovation, and high-throughput workflow design. This role combines independent project ownership with active collaboration across the Genome Engineering team. In addition to advancing their own research, the Scientist will serve as a technical resource for research associates on established workflows, ensuring knowledge-sharing and teamwork remain central to day-to-day operations. The Scientist will work under the direction of the Genome Engineering Team Lead and in close coordination with other team members to help achieve Colossal’s mission of advancing genome engineering technologies for conservation.

This position is based in Dallas, TX. Relocation assistance is available.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, implementation, and analysis of genome engineering workflows, including cloning, in vitro transcription, and large-cargo DNA delivery strategies
  • Lead independent project efforts in areas such as editing technology innovation and high-throughput workflow design, while coordinating closely with teammates to ensure integration of results
  • Serve as a technical resource to support research associates on established prime and base editing workflows, providing troubleshooting and data interpretation in a collaborative, mentorship-focused manner
  • Partner with team members to ensure timely execution of molecular biology tasks (cloning, DNA/RNA preps, QC, and handoffs), maintaining an equitable distribution of workload across the team
  • Document results clearly in electronic lab notebooks and share updates in team meetings and project discussions to promote transparency and collective progress
  • Contribute to the achievement of shared project milestones within the Genome Engineering program

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Strong expertise in molecular biology techniques, including cloning, plasmid preparation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA/RNA QC, RNA extraction, RNA handling, and qPCR methods
  • Experience with genome editing tools (e.g., CRISPR-based systems, recombinases, or related technologies)
  • Ability to thrive in a highly collaborative team environment, serving as a resource for junior researchers while actively seeking input from peers and the Genome Engineering Lead
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills with a cooperative approach to challenges
  • Excellent written/oral communication and organizational skills, with meticulous record-keeping in ELNs
  • Comfort with the challenges of working in non-model species where tools and resources are limited

Education and Experience

  • PhD in molecular biology, genetics, bioengineering, synthetic biology, or a related field
  • Hands-on experience in genome editing or nucleic acid technology development

Preferred Experience

  • Prior work on prime editing, base editing, or large-cargo delivery systems
  • Experience developing or scaling high-throughput molecular workflows
Familiarity with commonly used sequence design/analysis software (e.g., SnapGene, Geneious)
