At Horrocks, we believe the best work comes from companies with values, that our people are our greatest resource, and that we have a responsibility to the communities where we live and work. As a SUE Vac Truck Operator, you will operate hydrovac/vacuum excavation trucks for utility potholing, daylighting, and excavation while ensuring job site safety and accurate daily documentation. Responsibilities also include equipment inspections, basic maintenance, and cross-training in utility locating using EM locators, GPR, and utility maps.

What are the core responsibilities for the role?

  • Operate hydrovac / vacuum excavation trucks for utility potholing, daylighting, and general excavation.
  • Perform daily pre- and post-trip vehicle/equipment inspections and basic maintenance.
  • Handle job site setup and safety: cones, signage, traffic control (if applicable), site cleanup, etc.
  • Keep accurate daily records of job details: utility exposures, findings, locations, materials used, etc.
  • Cross-train in utility locating and designating — including use of EM locators, GPR, and interpreting utility maps/plans.
  • We offer on-the-job training and mentoring, especially for techs looking to grow into utility locating/designating roles.
  • Support available for obtaining CDL licenses, endorsements, and safety certifications.

Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies:

  • Prefer candidates with 2+ years operating hydrovac or vacuum excavation equipment, ideally in support of SUE work (utility potholing, daylighting, etc.).
  • CDL Class A or B with tanker endorsement preferred, but we are also open to:
    • We're open to non-CDL candidates who have experience with utility potholing or vacuum excavation using non-CDL vac trucks—especially if they're working toward getting a CDL or are interested in obtaining one. While a CDL is preferred, we have a non-CDL vac truck available, so we'd consider strong candidates who don’t yet have their CDL license.
  • Experience with utility locating/designating is a plus but not required.
  • Willing to cross-train in utility locating/designating as part of career growth.
  • Detail-oriented and takes pride in accurate, high-quality work.
  • Strong safety mindset — understands importance of pre-/post-trip inspections, equipment maintenance, and job site safety.
  • Physically capable — able to work outdoors in varied conditions, lift 50+ lbs, and handle physically demanding tasks.
  • Reliable and communicative — shows up consistently, communicates well with team, and willing to work variable hours when needed.
  • Career-focused and interested in learning related services (utility locating, designating, etc.).
  • Willing and able to work nights, weekends, and travel occasionally.

Why would a candidate want this job?

  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance
  • Generous paid time off
