SUMMARY
The Surgery Scheduler duties include scheduling office-based and/or hospital procedures consistent with the patients diagnosis and procedure request. The Surgery Scheduler must be able to respond to both written and oral correspondence regarding scheduling changes/ cancellations in a timely, accurate manner. Individual must be organized, and be able to manage a demanding workload with accuracy.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Schedules office and hospital based medical procedures for patients with appropriate Provider and time/location slot, utilizing appropriate scheduling.
- Responsible for obtaining insurance authorization for surgical procedures and communicating authorization status with patient and the hospital.
- Notifies insurances of any rescheduled surgery dates.
- Checks all surgery/procedure paperwork for accurate surgery dates and enters notes/special instructions needed for scheduling in the electronic medical record.
- Scans documentation into patients’ electronic medical records.
- Completes pre-procedure phone calls and confirms appointment times with patient.
- Takes appropriate action in responding to questions from patients.
- Provides accurate, detailed information to patients regarding test preparations, time of patients scheduled arrival, and any other directional information needed.
- Documents any and all conversations with patients, insurance companies, and physicians in EMR
- Other duties may be assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
The employee performing this position is expected to hold a High school diploma or general education degree (“GED”); and at least three months (preferably six months) related experience (e.g., health care setting, customer service, etc.) and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. The employee performing this position is expected to have some experience with medical terminology and understanding of medical insurance process. S/he must be able to understand or quickly learn about the differences between and among patients with private insurance, Medicare, Workers’ Compensation and self-paying patients, etc.
PREFERRED
Bilingual may be required during certain shifts.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
