About the Department

Responsible for ensuring that residential and commercial construction, remodels, and repairs adhere to County and building codes. This involves conducting inspections at key stages to verify compliance, preparing detailed reports, maintaining accurate records, and communicating effectively with contractors, property owners, and professionals to facilitate necessary corrections or approvals. Leads the inspection team to ensure consistency in enforcement, efficient scheduling of inspections, and delivery of high-quality customer service. Provides technical guidance and mentoring to inspectors, coordinates with the Building Official on complex or escalated cases, and supports the development and implementation of inspection policies, procedures, and training programs. Plays a key role in promoting safety, compliance, and public confidence in the County’s building inspection services.

Position Duties

  • Independently travels to and assess residential and commercial construction projects, including all trades activities authorized under County permits, to verify compliance with relevant building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes, ordinances, and regulations; approve compliant work, request corrections for deficiencies, and collaborate with other departments, agencies, and utility providers to coordinate inspection efforts and uphold construction standards.
  • Reviews construction plans and engineering calculations for structural and architectural components to understand projects, verify adherence to relevant codes, and suggest appropriate compliance methods. Ensure that project details meet regulatory and safety standards before inspections.
  • Engages in communication with developers and builders participating in commercial and residential construction and inspection projects; assesses practices, identifies issues, and proposes improvements; maintains and updates inspection records, project documentation, and Department files.
  • Serves as a mentor and technical resource for junior and mid-level staff, offering guidance, support, and expertise, while also delivering training to entry-level inspectors.
  • Perform plan review on an as-needed basis.
  • Maintain accurate records pertaining to permits and inspections. Provide inspection information and reports to various organizations.
  • Keep abreast of current industry developments and changes to the codes to provide accurate information to contractors and the public.
  • Performs additional tasks as assigned, including filling in for other staff as necessary and/or required.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalency.
  • Minimum of five (5) years or more experience conducting field inspections on residential and commercial projects or the equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Technical or Vocational School and/or Associate's Degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering (Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical), Building Science, or Technology.
  • State of Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) as Journeyman, Master Plumber, or Electrician within 1 year of hire.

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATES:

  • Valid Driver's License upon Hire AND Valid Colorado Driver's License within 60 days of hire.
  • International Code Council (ICC) Residential and Commercial Building Inspector within 30 days of hire.
  • International Code Council (ICC) Residential and Commercial Plan Reviewer within 6 months of hire.
  • International Code Council (ICC) MHP (Manufactured Home Installation Program) Certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Three (3) other International Code Council (ICC) Certifications in other International Code Council (ICC) Codes related to the position within 1 year of hire.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must successfully pass a background check
