Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Report directly to the Chair of Medicine and secondarily to the University of Hawaii Cancer Center (UHCC) Director for roles in the UHCC. 
  • Maintain strong relations and communications between the various stakeholders (JABSOM, healthcare systems, UHCC, Hawaii Cancer Consortium and private practices) with interests in the Hematology-Oncology Division and help provide educational activities for patients, clinicians and staff.
  • Provide academic oversight and leadership for all hematology-oncology subspecialists with UH faculty appointments. Build a highly functioning and cohesive UH Hematology-Oncology Division by providing strategic vision, faculty development, scholarship opportunities, recruitment, and faculty performance evaluation. Note that delegation of these responsibilities to other members of the Hematology/Oncology Division would be important in the development of future leaders within this division.
  • Identify resources that promote faculty development through well-structured and individualized plans using strong local (e.g. – leveraging UHCC faculty researchers) and national faculty mentors. Faculty development plans should be founded on scholarly activities that benefit career advancement, cancer care access, outreach, education, training, funding and science.
  • Leverage the Division of Hematology-Oncology and Hematology-Oncology fellowship program to increase hem/oncology services on the Neighbor Islands.
  • Involve the Hematology-Oncology fellows in oncology clinical trials so they learn the importance of advancing the state-of-the-art care of cancer patients and providing patients with lines of treatments not available outside of clinical trials. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate Professor MQ’s:

  • MD degree or equivalent medical degree from a medical school of recognized standing by date of hire
  • Maintaining certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine, or the American Board of Medical Specialties in Hematology/Oncology, including recertification when required.
  • Valid Hawaii Medical license by date of hire.
  • Four years in the rank of Assistant Professor, or four years of other health care experience, or a total of four years of teaching in the rank of Assistant Professor and other experience, or one year at the rank of Associate Professor at another health care school of recognized standing
  • Proven ability in teaching, research, and program administration.
  • Recognition for having made a significant scholarly contribution to the sub-specialty.
  • Ability to serve as a role model for learners and colleagues, demonstrating compassion, integrity, and respect for others.
  • Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
  • Familiarity with curriculum development and evaluation.
  • Minimum of 3 years of documented educational and/or administrative experience in an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency or hematology/oncology fellowship.

Full Professor:

  • Same as Associate Professor plus:
  • Four years in the rank of Associate Professor, or ten years of other health care experience, or a total of ten years of teaching in the rank of Associate Professor and other health care experience, or one year in the rank of Professor at another health care school of recognized standing.
  • Recognition for having made a major contribution to the clinical specialty.
  • Ability to create an environment where respectful discussion is welcome, with the goal of continued improvement of the educational experience. 
  • Demonstrated capacity for leadership in the clinical department and medical profession.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • 20+ years of experience directly related to teaching, clinical, and research endeavors.
  • Working knowledge of basic information systems (word, Excel, and Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
  • Subspecialty-specific expertise and qualifications acceptable per the ACGME Review Committee.
  • Board Certification in Hematology and Oncology.
  • Demonstrated experience with safety and quality programs.
