Instructional & Classroom Support Technician 1 works under the direction of the Instructional & Classroom Support Tech 4 and Instructional & Classroom Support Tech 3 employees. This position provides support requiring knowledge of biology including equipment, materials, techniques, and procedures. Position involves resetting lab experiments, assisting in the preparation of experiments, maintain lab equipment and assisting faculty. This position is required to abide by procedures and guidelines established by the college.

Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical students, 15% Adult Basic Education student, and 3% Applied Bachelor degrees.  Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, Washington, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw.  Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. Position Duties

Essential Functions

  • Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to support A&P and Biology.
  • Keep laboratories, stockroom, and storage areas clean and organized.  
  • Prepare labs and use safety procedures in handling hazardous materials including chemicals, bacterium and protozoa. 
  • Follow procedures to properly treat and dispose of hazardous waste.
  • Set up equipment, materials, teaching aids and demonstrations in support of lab courses.
  • Recommend materials, equipment, and instruments necessary to support assigned lab course loads. 
  • Provide clean and organized labs and materials. 
  • Operate, maintain, and repair lab equipment and instrumentation.
  • Wash laboratory supplies; common glassware, graduated cylinders, test tubes, dissection tools, trays etc...
  • Conduct and update inventories of equipment, supplies and chemicals.
  • Organize and prioritize assigned tasks to ensure they are accomplished to meet deadlines. 
  • Understands and follows applicable laws, regulations, and other standards to establish and/or maintain a safe work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and projects, manage and organize supplies, and multi-task to assist others. 
  • Experience working with chemicals in a laboratory setting; handling chemicals and hazardous waste. 
  • Knowledge of safe laboratory practices, and maintenance and repair of equipment and instrumentation.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to work on feet for an extended period.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate of Art’s degree with major study in a science related field or successful completion of college level coursework in biology or equivalent training or experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with major study in a scientific related field
  • Combination of training, formal education, and/or research or service laboratory operations experience.
