Operating Room (OR) Equipment Technician
Position Summary:
We are seeking a reliable and technically skilled Operating Room (OR) Equipment Technician to support the surgical team by preparing, operating, and maintaining specialized surgical equipment. This on-call position requires availability from 10:30 PM to 5:00 AM, with a Saturday on-site rotation every 8 to 10 weeks.
This position plays a critical role in ensuring all surgical technology functions properly to support safe and efficient patient care.
Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will bring at least one year of experience in a hospital setting, with a background in the medical field and/or operating room environment. They will demonstrate a strong technical aptitude, including the ability to set up, operate, and troubleshoot complex medical equipment used during surgical procedures. A proactive, detail-oriented mindset and the ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations are essential for success in this role.
Preoperative Equipment Preparation
- Review surgery schedules to identify cases needing specialized equipment
- Coordinate with OR nursing staff to confirm equipment needs
- Ensure battery-powered equipment is charged and functional 24 hours in advance
- Perform routine pre-use functionality and safety checks
Intraoperative Technical Support
- Ensure equipment is ready prior to incision
- Set up, operate, and troubleshoot OR equipment including:
- LASERs
- Surgical robots
- Video towers/insufflators
- Microscopes
- Infusion/perfusion technology
- LASERs
- Remain on standby during surgeries to respond to technical issues
- Accurately document equipment use and report malfunctions promptly
- Initiate repair requests and communicate with Clinical Engineering as needed
Postoperative Equipment Management
- Clean and disinfect equipment following procedure
- Return and store equipment in designated locations
- Ensure all items are stored in a ready-to-use state
Training and Continuous Learning
- Participate in onboarding and training of new equipment technicians
- Help assess equipment competency for staff as needed
- Stay updated on new technologies through vendor demos, manuals, and training sessions
Additional OR Support
- Assist in patient transport, positioning, and safety monitoring
- Retrieve supplies during procedures when necessary
- Support room turnovers and other OR workflows as assigned
- Perform additional duties as delegated by supervisor
Skills & Competencies:
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities
- Calm, responsive, and professional under pressure
- Effective communication and collaboration with clinical teams
- Physically able to lift, push, and position equipment and assist patients
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- Surgical/Operating Room environment
- Frequent standing, walking, lifting, and handling of medical equipment
- May be exposed to bodily fluids and sterile environments
Schedule Requirements:
- Shift: TBD
- On-call shift: 10:30 PM – 5:00 AM (must be able to respond when called in)
- Saturday Rotation: One Saturday every 8–10 weeks as part of the scheduled rotation
- Flexibility for occasional holidays and weekend coverage as needed
