The Radiological Protection Division is devoted to protecting workers, members of the public, and the environment from hazards due to exposure to radioactive material. Our staff is concerned with the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiological hazards to permit the safe use and application of ionizing radiation at Argonne. Interns will learn how to provide operational health physics support that includes planning radiological work and implementing radiation protection standards and best practices.
The following skills will be developed:
Learn how to evaluate radiological hazards and implement appropriate controls through the development of a radiological work permit
Learn to use computer applications in dosimetry, shielding, and spectrometry ̈
Learn to implement ALARA principles in radiological work
Acquire knowledge and hands-on training on the use of state-of-the-art health physics instrumentation to perform measurement and analysis of ionizing radiation.
Shadow health physics personnel in all support areas on site to understand the unique hazards and challenges.
Education and Experience Requirements
This opportunity is open to any undergraduate or graduate student with relevant experience who meets the following criteria:
Currently enrolled in a nuclear engineering, health physics, or physics program (ABET accreditation preferred) full time. Graduate students are eligible to apply.
Completed one year of schooling with a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Must be at least 18 years old at the beginning of the internship.
Must be a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident at the time of application.
Must pass a drug screening test upon offer acceptance.
Desired skills:
Knowledge of: health physics/radiation protection theory and practice; measurement and analysis techniques for ionizing radiation and radioactivity; ALARA principles; radiation protection standards; biological effects of radiation.
Proven oral and written skills to effectively communicate technical information to workers and management.
Ability to develop interpersonal relationships with researchers and field support personnel.

HourlyThe expected hiring range for this position is $18.96 - $45.54.Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only.
