Description

 Summary of Purpose:

Assist veterinarians and assistants with handling, surgical and anesthetic procedures ensuring daily and high-level care of all surgical patients.

Duties (Essential Functions):

Provide veterinary services under the direction of the KHS Veterinarian.

  • Assist Veterinarian with conducting physical examinations of animals to determine surgical fitness; reports health concerns to attending veterinarian.
  • Prepares animals for sterilization surgery; assists Veterinarian in surgery as needed.
  • Restrains, monitors, and maintains patients during induction, intubation, and anesthesia.
  • Observe animals post-surgery to detect any abnormal behavior or symptoms and promptly report them to the Veterinarian.
  • Stay current in knowledge of emergency drugs and protocol.

Provide professional, compassionate, stellar customer services to all who visit, call, volunteer, donate or work for KHS.

  • Gather information from clients during animal intake including brief animal health history.
  • Provides in-person and telephone client services, education, and answers questions.
  • Informs clients of animal health and surgical aftercare instructions.
  • Actively promotes spay and neuter initiatives.

Clean, organize, and sanitize the facility and animal areas.

  • Clean and sanitize animal facility areas including treatment rooms, kennels, cages, work areas and public areas.
  • Maintain and re-stock all areas of the clinic.
  • Maintain a healthy and safe environment for animals and people.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Minimum 1 year experience working with animals.
  • Work experience in the animal health field preferred.
  • Intermediate to advanced dog and cat knowledge preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with little direct supervision.
  • Great interpersonal skills in person and by phone with clients, staff, and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, and ability to process paperwork accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to accurately perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Humane attitude towards animals.
  • Ability to manage the emotional aspect of end-of-life services and humane euthanasia, and support staff in high-emotion circumstances.
  • Accept, support, and represent KHS core values, programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Ability to lift or otherwise move large animals – up to 50 pounds; full range of motion, including stooping, bending, reaching, etc.
  • Background Check required.

Physical, Psychosocial, and Cognitive Demands/ Working Environment

  • Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, walking, and standing regularly while performing job functions.
  • Frequently lifts, carries, or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to and exceeding 50 lbs.
  • Includes working with animals in a kennel/shelter setting (indoor/outdoor) in varying weather conditions.
  • Potential for exposure to allergens (including but not limited to pet dander, dust, peanut butter), and zoonotic diseases (diseases transferred from animals to humans).
  • Exposure to chemicals.
  • Exposure to loud noise.
  • Exposure to emotional circumstances.
  • Fast-paced environment.
