Minimum Qualifications and Requirements of District Homeless Liaison /Parent-Involvement Coordinator:

  • BA/BS in Education, Human Services or related field
  • A strong background in working within a public school environment
  • Good communication skills and organizational skills
  • Flexible, accountable, compassionate, objective
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Administration and School Personnel
  • Experience with assisting families in addressing school issues/communication

Specific Core Function:

Support the removal of barriers to education for students who are designated as homeless, neglected or delinquent, students who are entering or returning to school from correctional facilities or in foster care or at risk of any of these identifications by working with families, students, care givers, school district staff and community resource providers. Ensure that Federal requirements are met and school district policies are followed. Organize training for school personnel to increase understanding of homelessness and other situations that put students at risk of academic failure.

Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Assist parents in finding ways to overcome barriers to involvement related to transportation, translation and their own educational needs
  • Arrange for transportation to school of origin as needed following district policy, best interest determination, and McKinney-Vento Act as applicable.
  • Collaborate with the Administration, Principals, Social Workers, School Liaison at each school, Guidance Counselors, and administrative assistants (or school team) to increase awareness of families in transition/homeless students and other students at risk of becoming homeless who are enrolled in the schools through scheduled meetings, e-mails, or other written communication and provision of training/information-sharing workshops
  • Ensure the maintenance of records and documentation on at risk students who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless regarding but not limited to attendance, grades, test scores, and meals
  • Participate in regularly scheduled community agencies’ meetings and community forums to help increase community awareness of this role
  • Continue the strong collaboration between the district and community providers of services to homeless and at risk children and youth and their families at risk of becoming homeless
  • Continue to work with shelters, transitional housing agencies, and other community agencies to create learning environments and to develop opportunities to help build basic study
  • Adopt a process for effective and timely resolution of school enrollment disputes
  • Participate in state, regional, and national training sessions and professional growth opportunities relative to McKinney-Vento law and relative to working with families in transition within the schools

 

Specified Length/Hours of Position:

 

  • This is a non-affiliated, salaried, 210-day school year position. This is a grant funded position. 
  • Flexible hours may be required to meet with parents and work with students and families when school is not in session.
