Reports To:                Aquatics Coordinator  

Duty Days:                 Year-Round

Wage/Hour Status:   Non-Exempt - $14 / hour (Lifeguard)

 

Qualifications:

 

Minimum Age Requirement:  15 years old (Lifeguard) and 16 years old (Head Lifeguard)

American Red Cross Lifeguarding and First Aid Certification plus a Professional Rescuer CPR with AED certification.

Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques

An understanding of facility rules, policies and procedures regarding American Red Cross Lifeguarding

Maintain the fitness level at which they were certified through the American Red Cross as a Lifeguard

Lifeguards will be tested periodically over rescue skills, fitness level and knowledge in regards to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program

Must be self-motivated, accountable and dependable for the job task  (Head Lifeguards must be able to hold the lifeguards accountable for their tasks.)

Must be safety conscious and should have a conviction for any safety concerns

Must wear Katy ISD Lifeguard uniform at all times.

Must work a minimum of 30 hours over a 6 month period to remain as an active employee. (Head Lifeguards must have a minimum of 40 hours as a Katy ISD Lifeguard.)

 

Primary Purpose:

 

Act as a first responder in the case of an aquatic emergency for any swimming activity and/or event at Katy ISD Natatoriums.  Lifeguards should be prepared to make appropriate rescues for any water victim, perform CPR for any breathing or cardiac emergency as well as provide minor first aid care.  (Head Lifeguards must supervise and work with the lifeguards on duty for any district or non-district event.)

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide lifeguard services for district and/or non-district pool activities and events deemed necessary by the Aquatics Coordinator.
  2. Enforce pool and facility rules, policies and procedures.
  3. Responsible for self-scheduling and attendance of scheduled shifts.  (Head Lifeguards must establish a lifeguard rotation schedule, report lifeguard attendance, and find coverage when a lifeguard is absent.)
  4. Complete records and reports such as shift reports and time sheets during or at the end of each shift.  (Head Lifeguards must ensure the lifeguards have completed their paperwork.)
  5. Attend and participate during in-service trainings offered by Katy ISD.
  6. Monitor lifeguard scans and surveillance techniques and correct if not to standard.
  7. Check pool chemistry and ensure chemical levels are normal for swimming activities.
  8. Collaborate with event supervisors and Katy ISD swim coaches to ensure the safety of participants and attendees.

Equipment Used:

 

Lifesaving equipment such as rescue tube, backboard, ring buoy, CPR mask, first aid equipment and AED as well as personal equipment such as a whistle.

 

Working Conditions:

 

The position does requires standing and sitting while performing surveillance. Other working conditions include minimum exposure to pool chemicals, slippery surfaces and humid conditions.
