The Operations Section of King County Solid Waste Division is actively seeking skilled and safety-conscious Truck Drivers to support essential waste management services across the County. We are hiring for one (1) career service position and thirteen (13) Term Limited Temporary (TLT) positions. The TLT positions are expected to last approximately six (6) months, with the possibility of extension. About the Role:

These positions will safely haul refuse material from our transfer stations to our landfill in Maple Valley and complete other associated tasks. You can view a list of the transfer stations at: http://your.kingcounty.gov/solidwaste/facilities/transfer.asp

About the Team:

The award-winning and innovative Solid Waste Division has been recognized for operational excellence and is now developing partnerships to transition to a sustainable, circular economy to cut greenhouse gas emissions. 

The Division's line of business includes waste prevention, resource recovery, and waste disposal. This robust and dynamic enterprise-funded division has an annual budget exceeding $160 million. More than 400 employees create value for customers across 10 locations, which include eight recycling and transfer stations. Resources are harvested on-site, and refuse is transported by the Solid Waste Division to the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill in Maple Valley.

Position Duties

What You Will Be Doing: 

  • Safely operate a variety of commercial vehicles, including trucks and trailers, trucks equipped with water storage tanks and pumps, dump trucks with pony trailers, fuel tanker trucks, side dumps, and lowboy trailers.
  • Hook and unhook hydraulic hoses to specific trailers.
  • Experienced in driving in a variety of unique situations and weather conditions, safely installing tire chains.
  • Load and transport solid waste, trailers, equipment, gravel, water, fuel, and other materials to work areas throughout King County.
  • Perform and document safety inspection of tractors and trailers.
  • Check and refill fluid levels and tire pressure; refuel and maintain vehicle in a clean and operational condition.
  • Document trip activities and complete required trip reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications You Bring:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience safely driving tractor/trailer, or similar combinations such as, Class A tractor/trailer combinations with three or four axles towing a unit with two or three axles with a gross vehicle weight of a maximum of 17,000 pounds per axle. 
  • Skilled in communicating with a diverse range of staff and customers in a pleasant, respectful, and culturally sensitive manner.
  • Skilled in working in a team environment and independently to complete assignments.

Required Licenses:

  • Possession of a valid Washington State Driver's License
  • Possession of a valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's License with current Washington State Department of Transportation Medical Card and Air Brake Endorsement

It Would Be Great If You Also Bring:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant work experience driving combinations such as:
  • Side dump trailer, 12 to 14 yard pony trailer
  • 6,000 to 7,000 gallon wastewater tanker
  • 3,000 to 4,000 gallon fuel truck
  • Lowboy trailer for equipment transport

Other Qualifications

Working Conditions:

  • Work Location: The work associated with these positions will be located at Cedar Hills Regional Landfill, 16645 228th Avenue SE, Maple Valley, WA
  • Work Schedule: These full-time positions currently work a 40-hour work week. These positions are covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and are overtime eligible. The possible schedules for these positions are: 4/10, with one day off between Monday and Friday, or 5/8, Monday through Friday. Also, 7/10’s with one week on and one week off may be available.
  • Union Representation: These positions are represented by Teamsters, Local 174.
  • Duration: This recruitment aims to fill a Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) position with an anticipated duration of six (6) months. If you are an eligible King County employee, these positions are available to you as a special duty assignment.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to get in and out of Class A Tractor multiple times a day.
  • Ability to attach and detach hydraulic and air lines.
  • Ability to operate a pressure washer. 

Workplace Exposures: 

  • Exposure to noise at landfill and transfer stations.
  • Exposure to smells and odors that may be present at the landfill and transfer stations.
