About the Role:
Under the direction of the Streets Supervisor, performs all functions necessary for the completion of public works projects.  Key responsibilities include snow removal, streetlight repairs, street sweeping and stormwater maintenance, general maintenance activities, and repair and maintenance of roadways.   May also be assigned to assist all Public Works divisions.  Decisions on day-to-day activities are made independently.  Supervision received is limited.  Daily work plans are discussed with daily review of progress.  There is frequent interaction with the public and other streets workers.  Part of on-call rotation and must be able to respond within forty (40) minutes.

SALARY RANGE:
Streets Maintenance Worker with CDL  $26.71/hr  - $ 30.52/hr

Position Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate snow removal, salting, and/or sanding equipment to remove snow from roadways and City parking lot surfaces.  Perform other snow removal functions as directed.
  • Make roadway repairs, performing such repair functions as: crack sealing, pothole filling, hauling and spreading fill dirt and gravel, placing and grading of shoulder gravel, right-of-way, and median mowing, cutting of weeds, weed spraying, collecting and hauling of refuse, and the hauling and laying of roadway surface materials.
  • Install and maintain road marking, signing devices, and culvert pipes.
  • Operate a street sweeper to maintain clean streets.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance, keeps maintenance records, and perform necessary preventive maintenance.
  • Perform rudimentary welding, grinding, and drilling.
  • Monitor and maintain recycling/compost site and review video records to determine violators.
  • Repair underground utilities; survey and perform facility construction and maintenance.
  • Perform concrete work, as necessary.
  • Clean storm drains and culverts to keep water flowing freely.
  • Respond to emergency situations and natural disasters.
  • Perform brush chipping and chainsaw cutting.
  • Maintain stormwater facilities.
  • Repair, rebuild, and install streetlight fixtures/poles in the shop and in the field.
  • Must be available to work outside of normal work hours for emergencies and snow removal.
 Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist Park and Utility divisions, as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • None
Minimum Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or the equivalent desired.
  • Three years’ operating large trucks or similar equipment desired.
  • Electrical experience desired.
 Certifications:
  • Must possess a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License with CDL endorsement upon hire and maintain such licensing during entire course of employment.
  • Class B and Class C endorsements required.
  • Tanker and Class A endorsement highly desirable.

Necessary Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Operating knowledge of road construction equipment desired
  • Experience with electric equipment desired
  • Ability to interact effectively with the public and to operate a variety of mechanical equipment.  
  • Ability to think logically to make decisions. 
  • Ability to foster cooperation and teamwork among peers.  
  • Ability to identify and analyze problems, evaluate alternative solutions and make sound judgments, especially in stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain adequate attendance. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City elected and appointed officials, employees, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse individuals and groups.
