Job Summary
The Produce Department Manager oversees daily operations, ensuring quality produce, efficient procedures, and exceptional customer service. This role involves managing staff, inventory, ordering supplies, implementing merchandising strategies, and maintaining a safe work environment while driving profitability and customer satisfaction in line with Mackenthun’s Exceptional Experience.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Staff Management:
- Lead, motivate, and train department staff to ensure they are well-prepared and engaged.
- Create staff schedules, assigning tasks to ensure adequate staffing for peak periods.
- Conduct regular performance reviews to provide feedback, identify areas for growth, and recognize achievements.
- Foster a positive work environment to boost team morale and collaboration.
- Ensure staff members are knowledgeable about products, food safety, and customer service standards.
- Provide ongoing coaching and support to enhance individual and team performance.
- Conduct probationary and annual employee performance reviews to monitor development and provide growth opportunities.
Inventory & Ordering:
- Continuously monitor inventory levels and reorder stock in a timely manner to avoid product shortages.
- Implement product rotation to ensure the oldest products are used or sold first, minimizing waste.
- Conduct regular inspections of produce quality to maintain freshness and remove damaged items immediately.
- Keep accurate records of inventory levels and ensure proper documentation for stock received and used.
- Work closely with suppliers to ensure consistent product availability and quality.
Customer Service & Sales:
- Provide exceptional customer service by assisting customers with product selection and answering inquiries.
- Ensure the department is well-organized, clean, and visually appealing to attract customers.
- Stay updated on sales trends and adjust product selection, pricing, and promotions to meet customer demand.
- Develop creative promotions, seasonal displays, and product offerings to encourage repeat business.
- Engage with customers, creating personalized experiences to build customer loyalty.
Health, Safety & Compliance:
- Ensure the department adheres to all health, safety, and sanitation regulations, including local food safety guidelines.
- Perform regular safety audits to identify potential hazards and address them immediately.
- Maintain a safe work environment by ensuring equipment is in proper working order and staff follows all safety protocols.
- Ensure proper food handling, labeling, and storage procedures are followed to prevent contamination.
Financial Performance & Budgeting:
- Achieve department budget goals by managing inventory, pricing, and labor effectively.
- Monitor shrinkage and take proactive steps to minimize losses through proper product handling and training.
- Regularly track labor and sales costs to meet profitability goals while maintaining excellent customer service.
- Complete weekly financial assessments, including monitoring sales, purchases, and inventory usage, to stay on track with budget expectations.
- Adjust staffing and sales strategies to ensure financial targets are met or exceeded.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with store managers, marketing teams, and other department managers to align goals and drive overall store success.
- Actively participate in store meetings and contribute ideas for improving operations, sales, and customer experience.
- Collaborate with marketing on promotional campaigns, ensuring product offerings are well-represented in advertising materials and seasonal events.
- Maintain open communication with other departments to ensure smooth operations and customer satisfaction.
Department Development:
- Stay current with industry trends, customer preferences, and new product offerings to keep the department competitive.
- Introduce and implement new products, recipes, and ideas to meet evolving customer demands and preferences.
- Support team development by providing ongoing training to enhance their product knowledge and customer service skills.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging staff to contribute innovative ideas and participate in skill-building opportunities.
- Set and track departmental goals for team members to help them reach their professional development targets.
Requirements
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 2+ years of management experience.
- Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong organizational, multitasking, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, delegate efficiently, and think creatively.
- Proficiency in Windows, Google Business Suite, and basic internet functions.
- Strong math skills.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- Work in both office and physical labor settings with exposure to machinery and cleaning chemicals.
- Requires standing, walking, talking, hearing, and seeing for extended periods.
- Frequent bending, reaching, crouching, kneeling, and climbing stairs.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs. and pulling/pushing up to 2,500 lbs. with a pallet jack.
- Exposure to noise, cold temperatures, and terrazzo flooring in a fast-paced, smoke-free environment.
