About the Department
Hiring range is negotiable between $30,200 and $39,255 depending on a candidate's qualifications and experience.
The purpose of this position is to perform responsible unskilled custodial work in the care and cleaning of City buildings. An employee in this class performs general housekeeping work in the assigned buildings and walkways, and may assist with mowing and landscaping duties. Work includes typical housekeeping duties in cleaning bathrooms, offices, hallways, sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, etc. Hours may vary, from early morning to evening, depending upon needs of the department or tasks to be completed.
This job works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Position Duties
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Cleans walls, windows, and blinds.
- Mixes chemicals and applies products to label specifications.
- Cleans bathrooms; scrubs lavatories and toilet fixtures and mirrors and replaces or restocks tissue, paper towels, soap dispensers, and other cleaning supplies.
- Cleans and buffs floors; strips and waxes floors occasionally.
- Vacuums public areas and offices and shampoos carpets occasionally.
- Cleans sidewalks, empties trash, and picks up trash around buildings.
- Dusts cabinets and furniture in offices and public areas.
- Cleans glass doors and mirrors.
- Empties trash containers and replaces liners as needed; keeps public areas clean.
- Uses tools and equipment, including floor buffers, vacuum cleaners, brooms, and mops.
- Follows safety procedures in performance of work.
- Opens and closes the facility at the beginning and end of each day.
- Conducts inventory of janitorial supplies and products; and orders stock to maintain inventory levels.
- Addresses and completes basic building maintenance needs.
- Cross trains at various locations to cover other facilities, as needed.
- Sets up, breaks down and participates in various events the department is holding.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret use of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for proper use of chemicals.
- Ability to identify cleaning needs and resolve with appropriate methods and supplies.
- Ability to perform manual labor requiring continuous physical effort.
- Ability to operate equipment and maintain use of equipment for effective cleaning procedures.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with peers, supervisor, and the public when required.
Other Qualifications
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
- One (1) year of housekeeping experience or related experience
- Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Possession of valid First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications or the ability to obtain within 6 months from date of hire.
- Must have the ability to obtain any other certifications and/or licenses required for assigned position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
