Ski Patroller

Location: Powderhorn Mountain Resort – Mesa, Colorado 

Department: Ski Patrol

Reports To: Patrol Director / Assistant Patrol Director

Employment Type: Seasonal, Full-Time or Part-Time



Ski Patrollers are responsible for promoting and maintaining the safety of guests and employees across the mountain. This includes providing emergency medical care, transporting injured guests, performing mountain safety activities, and assisting in daily operations. Ski Patrollers serve as professional representatives of Powderhorn Mountain Resort, ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and welcoming environment for all mountain users. Upon hire, patrollers will be assigned to: Trainee, Patrol Level 1, Patrol Level 2, Patrol Level 3, or Supervisor, based on their current qualifications, experience, and past job performance.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Provide first aid and emergency medical care to guests and employees. 

• Safely and time efficiently transport injured or ill guests using toboggans. 

• Monitor and promote skier/snowboarder responsibility, enforcing the Skier Responsibility Code and resort policies. 

• Inspect, open, and close assigned trails and terrain daily, ensuring signage and safety systems are in place. 

• Respond promptly and effectively to accidents, incidents, and emergencies anywhere on the mountain. 

• Assist with lift evacuations, search and rescue operations, and other emergency response activities. 

• Participate in avalanche hazard reduction and snow safety duties (training and assignment dependent). 

• Maintain patrol equipment, medical gear, and facilities in clean and operational condition. 

• Provide outstanding guest service and foster a culture of intelligent risk management, professionalism, and teamwork.

• Perform other duties as assigned by Ski Patrol leadership or resort management.


Qualifications & Requirements:

• Strong alpine skiing or snowboarding ability, capable of safely navigating all terrain in all conditions, at an emergency response pace, while in full control. 

• Current Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) certification or equivalent (e.g., EMT or WFR). 

• Ability to repeatedly lift, carry, and transport up to 60 lbs in a mountain environment. 

• Physical stamina to perform strenuous work for extended periods of time 

• Ability to work outdoors in varying and extreme weather conditions for extended periods. 

• Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. 

• Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours. 

• Previous patrol, rescue, or emergency response experience preferred but not required.


Working Conditions:

• Work is performed outdoors in alpine winter conditions with variable weather, snow, and temperature extremes. 

• Exposure to physical risk while skiing, riding, or handling rescue situations. 

• Requires use of skis or snowboard, rescue equipment, radios, and medical gear
