About the Department
To establish a list of eligible candidates for current and future part-time vacancies, valid for up to one year. The immediate vacancy is a 10-month, part-time position at Simi Institute for Careers & Education in Simi Valley, California: Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

TESTING PROCESS:
A) Multiple Choice Test = 40% weighting on final score

Purpose Statement
Under the general supervision of an assigned supervisor, provides instructional, tutorial, technical and clerical assistance in classrooms, and laboratories to students in a Medical Assistant program at the Simi Institute for Careers & Education.
Distinguishing Characteristics
The Adult Education Instructional Assistant specializes in classroom, workshop, and walk-in instructional support for adult students. The focus is toward working one-on-one with students in a lab or other environment where the emphasis is on tutorial assistance, completing assignments, setting up learning stations, issuing materials and/or tools, and providing related clerical support. Assistants implement learning exercises, administer and score tests, and conduct demonstrations and simulations that support instruction in a class setting. Incumbents assigned to the Medical Assistant program will demonstrate competency in assisting students develop and increase communication skills and learn various medical skills and techniques in preparation for certification testing.
Position Duties
Essential Functions
- Tutors and instructs students in small group and individual settings within a classroom or laboratory environment to develop an increase in medical and language skills.
- Provides direct assistance in the use of equipment and materials needed for instruction as well as orienting students to the laboratory or workshop.
- Assists with presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises.
- Assists in conducting lessons and other classroom activities such as lab projects, small group exercises, and independent study. Reinforces learning experiences for students.
- Assists instructors in the classroom/laboratory concurrently with lecture or discussion.
- May assist instructors in maintaining inventory and setting up lab equipment.
- Provides assistance to students with the correct pronunciation and understanding of technical progress.
- Reads and maintains up-to-date familiarity with materials used in the medical lab.
- May proctor tests in the absence of the instructor.
- Cleans equipment and work areas. Handles and disposes of harmful or hazardous materials according to specific instructions relating to their disposal.
- Maintains records of classroom, laboratory and equipment/supply room activity, including preparation of forms, inputting data or otherwise retaining information on the condition, maintenance, and distribution of equipment, materials, supplies, and manuals.
- Serves as a liaison between the ESL students and instructors.

Education and Experience
Graduation from high school or equivalent and one year as a Medical Assistant
OR
Certificate of completion from a vocational school or college Medical Assistant in California, or higher levels of medical professional education and experience.

Physical Abilities:
- Ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time
- Lifting equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Visual acuity to accurately operate and apply medical equipment, read small incremental instrumentation, and read technical and safety information

Working Environment
Work is performed in an indoor environment where safety considerations exist from physical labor and hazardous materials.
