Position Overview
The Picking Lead is responsible for overseeing all order picking activities within the distribution center to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to service level agreements (SLAs). This role provides day-to-day leadership to the picking team, supports training and development, monitors performance, and ensures orders are picked, staged, and released on time. The Picking Lead serves as the first point of escalation for picking issues, helping to resolve errors and remove barriers to productivity.
Key Responsibilities
Daily Leadership & Supervision
- Lead and coordinate the activities of the picking team to meet daily order fulfillment goals.
- Assign work, balance labor across zones, and monitor progress to ensure on-time completion.
- Serve as the on-floor lead, providing coaching and feedback to team members.
Order Accuracy & Quality
- Ensure all orders are picked correctly and staged in the proper locations.
- Conduct spot checks and audits to minimize errors and rework.
- Partner with Inventory and Quality Control teams on discrepancies.
Performance Management
- Track and report productivity metrics (UPH, accuracy rate, SLA adherence).
- Identify underperformance and support corrective action plans as needed.
- Recognize and reinforce strong performance.
Process Improvement & Safety
- Recommend and implement process improvements to increase speed and accuracy.
- Ensure team adherence to all safety protocols, housekeeping standards, and equipment procedures.
- Support cross-training initiatives to build a flexible workforce.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with the Picking Manager, Fulfillment Supervisors, Shipping Leads, and other DC leads to ensure smooth flow of work.
- Act as the first escalation point for order issues and communicate resolutions clearly.
- Participate in daily huddles and planning meetings.
Qualifications
- 2+ years of warehouse or distribution center experience; prior lead/supervisory experience preferred.
- Strong understanding of picking processes, RF scanning, and WMS functionality.
- Proven ability to coach, motivate, and lead a team in a fast-paced environment.
- High attention to detail with strong organizational skills.
- Ability to meet productivity targets while ensuring safety and quality standards.
- Flexibility to work extended hours or weekends during peak periods.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. for extended periods.
- Comfortable working in a warehouse environment with varying temperatures.
