20250725130906_Library.jpgJefferson-Madison Regional Library is seeking candidates to be considered for the part-time position of Shelver Support for the Crozet Library who are highly motivated and who support JMRL's Mission Statement to foster personal growth and life-long learning for all by connecting people with ideas, information, and each other. 

The starting salary begins at $15.75 an hour ($16,380.00 annually). This is a 20-hour regular part-time, non-exempt position and is eligible for prorated benefits. 

This position performs routine work at the Crozet Library organizing and maintaining library materials, assisting patrons, performing circulation functions, and maintaining neatness of public areas, under the immediate supervision of Branch Manager, Reference Support Staff Supervisor or Supervising Children’s Librarian or Circulation Supervisor, depending on assignment.

Position Duties

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Duties may vary based on assigned branch:

  • Shelves materials according to Dewey Decimal system.  Shelf reads the stacks for accuracy and shifts books as required.
  • Identifies and evaluates damaged and/or incorrectly labeled materials.  Replaces, fixes, corrects, or refers the damage for correction.
  • Completes pulls and processes patron holds requests.
  • Searches for missing books for other branches.
  • Assists in weeding and inventory process.
  • May be asked to create and maintain book displays, including poster design and book selection as needed.
  • Performs circulation of library materials, including but not limited to registering patrons, checking materials in and out, collecting fines and fees, and performing functions associated with holds on reserved materials.
  • Answers patrons’ questions and assists them in locating items and navigating the collections. Directs patrons to appropriate specialized staff members and online services, as needed.
  • Assists staff with various projects as needed.
  • Works a flexible schedule that includes days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of JMRL equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time. 
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
Other Duties:
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.

  • High School diploma or GED, experience using a public library1 year of customer service experience, and some familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System. 
OR
  • Experience using a public library, 3 years of customer service experience, and some familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System. 
OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:
  • Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS: 
Job Knowledge:
  • Knowledge and ability to shelve materials in order by call number.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply, explain and enforce policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge and ability to use and/or set up library equipment such as computers, circulation software, printers, copiers, cash registers, laminating machines, and phones.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware.
Reading:
  • Basic: Ability to understand the meaning of commonly used multi-syllable words and simple paragraphs.  Comprehends simple written instructions, signs, and notices.
Writing:
  • Basic: Ability to write simple letters, paragraphs and sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.  
Math:
  • Basic: Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).  
Communication Skills:
  • Routine: Regular & routine interaction involving providing or exchanging basic information. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers.
Independence and Decision-Making:
  • Requires Immediate Direction: Normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. The immediate supervisor may, at times, provide close and constant review.
Technical Skills:
  • Basic: Uses standard technical skills appropriate to the assigned and apparent job responsibilities.
Fiscal Responsibilities:
  • Receives and disburses funds and prepares money for deposit.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • No responsibility for direction or supervision of others.

Other Qualifications

Physical Demands:

  • Medium Work:  Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Work requires pushing/pulling, standing for extended periods, lifting, reaching, stooping, bending, and carrying. 
  • Must be able to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.  Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software and Hardware:
  • Typically requires use of standard office equipment and telephone, and related software and hardware; hand truck, book trucks and carts; and any other equipment as appropriate or as assigned.  
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in office environment where there may be exposure to computer screen for extended periods of time, monitor glare and dust.   
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
