General Purpose

The Facilities Mechanical Technician performs maintenance and repairs on a variety of the City of Moab’s mechanical and electrical systems.

Reporting Relationships

Supervision Received: The Facilities Mechanical Technician works under the direct supervision of the Facilities Lead.

Supervision Exercised: N/A

Essential Functions

As part of a small team of employees dedicated to the maintenance and operation of City facilities, the Facilities Mechanical Technician is responsible for the following:

  • Preventive maintenance and repairs on a variety of mechanical and electrical systems including but not limited to; geothermal, HVAC, boilers, furnaces, evaporative coolers, electric motors, pumps, exhaust fans, fresh air intakes, lighting, plumbing, new equipment installations, and cooling towers.
  • Assessing and analyzing problems in electrical, mechanical, plumbing, or other systems.
  • Dealing with emergency repair problems with efficiency.
  • Establishing and implementing a preventative maintenance program on all mechanical and electrical systems in City buildings.

This position supports other Facilities employees, as well as Public Works employees, by occasionally:

  • Assisting with maintaining parking lots, landscape, and outdoor areas adjacent to facilities as needed, including occasionally removing ice, snow, and debris from sidewalks and parking lots. 
  • Performing light construction repairs as needed such as wall, ceiling, roof, flooring, and painting.
  • Handling other maintenance and operational needs as they arise, including assistance with a variety of custodial duties, some office work such as copying, filing, faxing, and internet research regarding repairs, maintenance, and record keeping.

The Facilities Mechanical Technician is expected to:

  • Work independently, as well as with others, to prioritize and complete tasks Facilities Mechanical Tech 2 according to an agreed-upon schedule.
  • Establish and sustain professional and constructive working relationships with companies, contractors, and other individuals and organizations that interface with the City.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
  • Portrays a positive public image and Works with the public and other employees in a courteous and professional manner.

This position requires a level of professional discretion and confidentiality. As such, the Facilities Mechanical Technician must be able to recognize sensitive and/or confidential information and keep such information confidential during the process of completing daily tasks.

Education and Experience

  • Associate degree, and
  • Two (2) years of job-related experience, or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Journey level proficiency of electrical, plumbing, and construction.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to perform light and heavy labor, such as moving furniture and receiving supplies.
  • Basic knowledge of job-related tools, and OSHA safety regulations.

Special Qualifications (Licenses, Certifications, etc.)

  • Availability to work evenings and weekends, on call, and respond to job-related emergencies.

During the first year must:

  • Obtain Natural Gas Certification, and EPA 608 Certification
  • Must obtain certificates of training in HVAC and Geothermal Maintenance

Work Environment and Physical Demands

The Facilities Mechanical Technician position is a physically active position. Tasks may entail muscular strain, including walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, and lifting. Talking, hearing, and seeing are essential to performing job requirements. Common eye, hand, and finger dexterity is required for most essential functions.

Selection Guidelines

A formal application and résumé is required; finalists will interview with the appropriate hiring authority as designated by the city council. Applicants must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check, and upon employment, must possess a valid Utah driver's license.
