About the Department

Boulder County Public Works Department is seeking to hire a Lead Control Systems Specialist. Control Systems Specialist, Lead is the lead/specialist level classification in the Control Systems series. The Control Systems Specialist, Lead performs a variety of skilled and specialized electrical duties including programming of HVAC, Card Access and Fire Alarm systems controls and the installation, repair and maintenance of control system components in a commercial environment. 

This is a full-time, benefited position that will work Monday - Friday 6:00am - 2:30pm. This position will work out of 2525 13th Street Boulder, Colorado. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is non-exempt (eligible for overtime). 

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.

Hiring Salary Range: $72,360.00 - $88,284.00 Annually

Tentative Hiring Timeline:

• First Round Interviews: October 9th and 10th
• Reference Check: Week of October 13th

New employees receive an 80-hour bank of vacation at the time of hire, in addition to 8 hours of both vacation and medical leave accruals each month (Must not have been employed at Boulder County during the 12 months prior to re-hire date to qualify). Boulder County offers bountiful benefits, including pension contributions.

Position Duties

1. Functions as systems leader in the installation, repair, maintenance, and programming of control systems
2. Performs, oversees design, and layout of new and retrofit DDC systems.
3. Estimates and tracks project costs
4. Directs the work of lower level employees working on an assigned crew
5. Provides leadership, training, coaching, and directs, monitors and reviews work of assigned staff
6. Provides input to supervisor about performance of staff
7. Installs electrical and electronic equipment including conduit, wire, cabling, motor controls, DDC controllers, door controls, and main processors
8. Installs electronic sensors for pressure, temperature, humidity, airflow and water flow related to control equipment
9. Troubleshoots and repairs electronic controls and electrical equipment
10. Tests, adjusts and balances HVAC mechanical equipment
11. Performs device validation and system commissioning
12. Installs fire, audio, and panic systems
13. Performs related work, as required
14. May be reassigned in emergency situations

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent and 4 years of related experience, including 2 years of  design, system programming, fire alarm, and card access experience, and at least 2 years of lead or supervisory capacity. 

Additional related education may count towards required experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

•  Journey Electrician license preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

• Thorough knowledge of the principles of Direct Digital Control systems operations, capabilities, limitations and uses
• Thorough knowledge of the practices and techniques of repair, maintenance, and installation of electronic control equipment
• Thorough knowledge of HVAC, fire, and Card access systems
• Working knowledge of computer hardware and software
• Ability to read and interpret control schematics and diagrams
• Ability to use electrical meters and other precision measuring equipment related to electronic equipment
• Ability to interface Direct Digital Controls with equipment and electrical system
• Ability to maintain accurate records
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, agencies and the public such as vendors and contractors

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Constantly lift with one or two hands tools and parts weighing 1-30 lbs. from floor to waist. This lift and those below are done with one or two hands
• Frequently lift tools and parts weighing 30-80 lbs. from floor to shoulder
• Occasionally lift parts weighing 60-80 lbs., and over from floor to shoulder, with co-workers
• Occasionally push and pull average 100 lb. force using various jacks and supporting devices

• Must have strength and dexterity in both arms and both hands for constant use of all tools, including hammers, wrenches, and power tools of all sizes for long periods of time each day
• Frequently spend time with arms overhead while lying under equipment, or arms extended with body leaning on equipment, or kneeling to the area being repaired (example of this would be taking brake shoes off using a 12 lb. impact or socket wrench)
• Occasionally disassemble and assemble various auto parts on work surfaces 35 inches high or at ground level

• Constantly stand, kneel, or lie on concrete floor
• Must work in unusual positions, depending on the job being done
• Frequently climb on and under equipment while carrying tools and parts weighing 1-30 lbs.
• Occasionally work out of shop on equipment broken down at job site or on roads in inclement weather
