About the Department

Under general direction performs professional level assignments requiring significant experience and sound judgment.  Assignments may include equipment design and development, test of materials, preparation of specifications, process studies, research investigations, report preparation and other activities of limited scope requiring knowledge of principles, practices and techniques commonly employed in the specific narrow areas of assignment.  Work involves conventional types of plans, investigations, surveys, structures or equipment with relatively few complex features for which there are precedents.
 
Because the Authority has a responsibility to serve the public
24 hours per day, an employee in this class is expected to work overtime as conditions demand, and may be called in on short notice during power outages and other emergencies.

Position Duties

• Receives instruction on specific assignment objectives, points of emphasis, reference and information sources, and possible solutions.  Unusual problems are solved jointly with supervisor and work is reviewed for application of sound engineering judgment.
• Renders independent evaluation, selection, and application of standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria using judgment and ingenuity in making minor adaptations and modifications.
• Exercises wide latitude of independent professional action adapting acquired professional expertise to a variety of complex projects.
• Prepares portions of proposals, including cost estimates and preliminary investigations of required tasks.
• Researches, prepares and writes simple reports and specifications and makes professional recommendations or designs within the scope of experience and training.
• Analyzes, trouble shoots and corrects electrical malfunctions.
• Analyzes operation of protective relays when activated upon a trip-out of generating unit to be able to pinpoint source of problem.
• Prepares estimates, plans and specifications for plant additions and modifications.
• Designs modifications and additions to existing equipment that require sizing of motors, cables and accompanying instruments and controls.
• Prepares all special reports on the operation and maintenance of the power generating plant as deemed necessary.
• Prepares special procedures and supervises the operation of electrical switching orders.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of field construction methods and contractual procedures.
• Knowledge of modern electrical generating facilities and the construction thereof.
• Knowledge of cogeneration systems.
• Knowledge of different engineering software programs.
• Ability to maintain adequate records both technical and administrative with respect to power plant operations and construction.
• Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely oral and written communication.
• Ability to convey information and ideas clearly both orally and graphically.
• Ability to perform limited research and prepare and write simple reports and specifications.
• Ability to analyze statistical data and to prepare complex reports.
• Ability to develop written procedures to facilitate environmental compliance throughout the plant.
• Ability to operate and utilize personal computers and their related peripherals.
• Ability to analyze a problem and suggest a solution.
• Ability to coordinate and direct drafters assigned to projects. 

Other Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in electrical engineering.  A minimum of eight years of progressively responsible experience in electrical engineering or power generating engineering and professional engineering certification is required.
