Purpose: This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining metrology systems and techniques to support R&D development activities within the Thin Film Technology group. The role focuses on thin film characterization, data analysis, and process improvement using in-line and off-line measurement techniques, programming, and statistical tools. Support includes activities at the R&D technical center and manufacturing facilities.

Essential Functions:

  • Support the design, implementation, and maintenance of robust metrology systems and procedures to ensure high standards of measurement accuracy and precision for thin film characterization, including in-line and off-line tools.
  • Program and automate data acquisition and analysis workflows.
  • Apply statistical methods, including Statistical Process Control (SPC), Gage R&R, etc, to monitor and improve measurement systems and process/product performance.
  • Collaborate with R&D and manufacturing teams to define measurement requirements and support process development.
  • Analyze experimental data to support product development and process optimization.
  • Document procedures, results, and findings in SOPs and presentations.
  • Conduct or participate in risk assessments on new and modified equipment.
  • Support implementation of R&D projects into global manufacturing facilities.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot metrology equipment and software systems.
  • Mentor and train new and junior engineers on metrology and characterization tools.
  • Lead projects or subprojects through stage-gate process to implement new or improved metrology processes or technologies.
  • Provide expert training and guidance to technical staff on measurement techniques, best practices, and the use of metrology equipment.
  • Travel domestically and internationally to R&D centers, manufacturing plants, supplier, and customer locations.
  • Adherence to the NSG/Pilkington Standards of Business Conduct and its Values and Principles
  • Other duties as assigned by manager

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physics, Optical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • ≥5 years of experience in metrology and/or thin film characterization

Qualifications Desired:

  • Experience with thin film characterization techniques (UV/Vis spectrophotometer, profilometers, XRF, FTIR, ICP-OES, FAAS, etc).
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C#, C++.
  • Experience with SPC tools and statistical analysis.
  • Familiarity with DOE and Six Sigma methodologies.

  • High energy, self-starting individual with results-oriented focus.
  • Must possess and maintain valid driver’s license and acceptable MVR as defined by safety requirements.
  • This position may travel up to 15%.

Salary Range: $88,068 - $110,090
