About the Role
The primary purpose of the Section Head, Pathology Chemistry position is to provide technical leadership, supervision, and administrative oversight of the assigned unit under the direction of the Chief Technologist/Director. This role is responsible for ensuring quality standards, guiding staff in daily operations, and assisting in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and operating guidelines to support efficient and compliant laboratory practices.
Responsibilities:What You’ll Do
- Provide technical and administrative supervision to section staff, including scheduling daily bench assignments, managing sick-call coverage, and ensuring efficient workflow.
- Oversee quality control, instrument performance, and test accuracy by monitoring results, implementing corrective actions, and reporting/resolving issues with leadership.
- Train and mentor new personnel and students, ensure timely completion of competency assessments, and provide ongoing coaching, evaluations, and performance management.
- Develop, review, and update standard operating procedures to maintain compliance with accrediting and regulatory agencies; prepare quality assurance and other required reports.
- Manage resources, including inventory, purchasing, and budget oversight, ensuring supplies and reagents are maintained, used efficiently, and waste is minimized.
- Support administrative operations by assisting with payroll, schedules, laboratory information system updates, and other duties as delegated by the Chief Technologist/Director.
- Promote a safe, compliant, and accountable work environment by investigating errors/accidents, implementing corrective action plans, and ensuring staff adherence to UH compliance standards, policies, and regulations.
- Perform bench-level testing and other duties as needed to support operations during vacancies or high-volume periods.
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Clinical Laboratory Science.
- Minimum of three (3) years of laboratory experience in the applicable specialty area (e.g., Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Molecular Diagnostics, and/or Blood Bank/Transfusion Medicine).
- Certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent credential required.

Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)
In compliance with New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly rate for this position is $38.19- $55.54.
