SUMMARY:   Incumbent performs the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to the class and can independently perform all repairs and servicing on the full range of vehicles owned by the City.  Incumbent must be able to direct, instruct and advise staff on maintenance and repair of vehicles, trucks and small equipment.  At this level incumbents are fully trained in procedures related to the assigned area of responsibility and may assume responsibility for the work unit in absence of the supervisor.  

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: The list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all the duties and responsibilities performed.

  • Serves as lead to staff, including assigning and monitoring work, and providing direction
  • Diagnoses the causes of equipment malfunction to determine which parts need repair, adjustment, rebuilding, fabrication or replacement
  • Repairs engine (gas and diesel) and associated components such as carburetors, electronic fuel injection systems, cooling systems and front-end and rear suspension systems, brakes, lighting, transmissions, electrical heating and air conditioning systems, tire repair and plow repair.
  • Performs tune-ups on engines of various types of equipment including heavy trucks, heavy equipment and specialized equipment
  • Repairs, overhauls, modifies, replaces, or installs mechanical, electrical and/or hydraulic units such as power-take offs, snow removal blades, etc., on trucks and other heavy equipment
  • Observes the need for other necessary repairs and performs as required
  • May perform preventative maintenance and complete minor repairs
  • Cleans assigned work area and picks up tools and places them in appropriate cabinet/chest
  • Assist with towing related activities
  • Maintain detailed records of activities and completed work orders
  • Respond to after hours and emergency calls after normal working hours and on weekends and holidays
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level

Crew leader. 

Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  • Procedures and methods related to area of assignment
  • Tools, equipment, and materials relevant to area of assignment
  • Safety procedures
  • Inventory principles
  • Recordkeeping principles
  • Occupational hazards and safe work practices

Skill in:

  • Using applicable tools and equipment related to area of assignment 
  • Prioritizing and assigning work
  • Troubleshooting systems related to area of assignment
  • Preparing and maintaining a variety of maintenance records
  • Using a computer and related software applications

 Ability to:

  • Estimate labor and material costs
  • Operate a variety of shop equipment and hand tools
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations
  • Communicate and use interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc., to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 

High school diploma or GED High school diploma or equivalent; Five years mechanical experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair. 

CERTIFICATION/ LICENSURE:

Must have at the time of hire and be able to maintain a valid Ohio commercial driver license.  Appropriate ASE certifications by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.  If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.    

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
