About the Department

The Transportation Engineering Technician Trainee learns basic concepts of highway and bridge construction and maintenance. The employee in this position will serve in a training capacity, within the Pavement Analysis and Evaluation Section. This incumbent learns and assists with core section functions and participates in the administration of the Asphalt Field and Compaction Technician School. The position also aids in the compilation and management of various databases related to smoothness, friction, and pavement projects. Participates in a training program requiring 180 Technician Development Hours. This role performs other related duties as required to support the analysis and evaluation of pavement infrastructure.

Position Duties

• Performs basic sampling and field testing materials using standard methods and tests
• Performs basic surveying including Survey Helper duties; reducing and checking field book notes of simple surveys; determining, plotting and checking the basic cross sections.
• Drafts simple designs and tracing by use of good standard practice with proper line widths and letters including standard title and   location sheets, plans, profiles and survey notes, standard summary sheets and estimated quantities
• Drafts property line plots and simple completed surveys
• Drafts simple maps, charts, graphics and diagrams
• Inventories streets, roads, and installed traffic control devices
• Contacts are with other employees within the immediate organization, office, project, or work unit, and in related or support units
• The work product or service affects the design or operation of systems, programs, or equipment; the adequacy of such activities as   field investigations, testing operations, or research conclusions; or the social, physical, and economic wellbeing of people
• Travel may be required therefore; a valid driver's license is required

Minimum Qualifications

• Little to no previous training is required to interpret detailed step-by-step instruction.  Work generally consists of repetitive  and routine tasks.

• Knowledge of physical science.

• Ability to interpret materials testing terms and punctuation and sentence structure.

• Ability to interpret drafting instruments, medial and techniques for reproduction.

• Knowledge of nomenclature and uses of standard laboratory equipment.

• Ability to interpret traffic control devices (signs, markings, symbols).

• Ability to do simple calculations of algebra, trigonometry and mathematical tables used in traffic analysis.

• Ability to reading simple plans and specifications and basic metric units and conversions.

• Ability to read, interpret and use topographic maps.

• Ability to interpret standard symbols, scales, station numbers and conversion equations.

• Ability to understand standard design terminology and nomenclature.

• Ability to perform and report tests.

• Ability to use standard tapes and chains and application of accepted rules for physical measurement of distances.

• Ability to work harmoniously with other employees.

• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Other Qualifications

REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION 
• High school graduation or equivalent.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE 
• No prior experience is required. This is the entry level classification in this series.
