We are hiring a Principal Sensory Scientist to join the R&D team! You will be responsible for advancing sensory capabilities, aligning resources with strategic priorities, and delivering insights that drive innovation, product quality and consumer satisfaction. This includes overseeing Sensory Science activities across powder, RTD and RTE applications.
Responsibilities include:
- Align Sensory resources with strategic ambitions to successfully deliver business objectives.
- Develop and execute compelling research plans to enable clear product and process design decisions for product development; work closely with cross functional partners to clarify proposition questions and to create joint learning plans; ensure accurate documentation of test goals and objectives, test design, and testing procedures.
- Drive sensory research strategy, including expansion of in-house sensory expertise and infrastructure; actively horizon scan emerging methods and innovations; identify opportunities to advance capabilities and overcome execution barriers.
- Serve as a subject matter expert in consumer and sensory science, guiding appropriate methodology selection & execution, mentoring sensory scientists and ensuring quality and accuracy of sensory data.
- Apply advanced techniques such as Drivers of Liking, DOE, and multivariate analysis
- Translate sensory insights to guide the project team in decision making process to achieve key results.
- Use rigorous logic to quantify, assess, and solve issues with effective solutions and identify challenges early and communicate appropriately.
- Coach, mentor, motivate, and supervise Sensory team; manage and grow team members - providing guidance on their assigned projects, ensuring product success, supporting professional advancement, and holding them accountable to their specific job responsibilities; provide feedback on performance and development.
- Proactively develop strategic relationships with external academic and industry partners.
- Ensure Sensory safety protocols are robust and applied.
- Onsite visits to client(s) for food/product reviews, trainings or other meetings as needed.
- Develop methodologies that allow correlating sensory and analytical results to guide product and ingredient development; identify and recommend a pipeline of technical discoveries that enable innovation
- Create and Maintain ingredient/product sensory lexicons.
- Create, monitor and manage shelf-life studies with respect to flavor integrity over time in conjunction with quality assurance and product development teams.
- Provide appropriate sensory training to internal panel and cross-functional associates to strengthen internal capabilities.
- Deliver sensory presentations and conduct product tastings with leadership teams, cross functional partners, and customers.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Sensory Science, Food Science, Psychology, or related field.
- 8+ years of experience in Consumer and Sensory Science in food or beverage industry, preferably CPG environment. Experience with dietary supplements preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of current consumer and sensory science methodologies, including affective, discrimination, and descriptive testing; record of implemented innovative technical solutions
- Strong knowledge of the industry, familiar with the latest food, beverage and flavor trends
- Strong IT/digitization skills, able to learn new systems quickly and to apply them in a fast-moving business environment; proficiency in sensory software (e.g., XLSTAT, Compusense, FIZZ).
- Experience with AI-driven research.
Role is hybrid from Downers Grove, IL. Apply now and make a difference in the world of health and wellness! Glanbia provides a reasonable range of compensation for roles that may be hired in IL. The annual salary for IL based employees for this role is $125,000 - $155,000 plus an annual bonus. This range may not be applicable to other locations. Factors that could be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, years of experience and comparison to current employees already in this role.
