About the Department
Under general supervision, performs transport of inmates to be extradited from other counties or states; and completes service of writs and other civil processes.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. This is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by incumbents of this class; employees may be assigned duties which are not listed below; reasonable accommodations will be made as required. Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. The job description does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change at any time by the employer. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Carry out the Sheriff’s Mission and Vision and adhere to the Office’s Core Values; Trust, Service, Community;
- Cultivates high morale and team culture within the Special Services Unit;
- Performs all services at a high-level and is customer service oriented;
- Subject to be called to duty in the event of a natural disaster or critical incident;
- Remains proficient in the essential functions of a Patrol Deputy and performs associated duties as necessary;
- Serves citations, precepts, notices, and subpoenas to the listed party in a timely manner; ensures paperwork is filled out properly and returned to the Courts before expiring;
- Serves Writs of Sequestration by locating described property, taking possession of the property, and holding for the courts for 10 days; serves paper to the defendant and returns in a timely manner;
- Serves Writs of Possession by taking control of the listed property and turning over to the Plaintiff; performs related tasks such as overseeing removal of property from residence and removal of mobile homes on the property; serves papers;
- Serves Writs of Attachment of Children by picking up a child from the parent and turning the child over to the designated person listed in the writ; serves the listed party;
- Serves Writs of Execution and Order of Sales by attempting to collect the judgment amount from the defendant; including levying property, preparing a notice of sale, advertising property, and notifying appropriate parties of sale; serves writ to the appropriate party;
- Conducts the Sheriff’s Tax Sale monthly at the Courthouse; fills out Notice of Sales, mails out certified letters to all parties involved, posts the notices at various locations, and places them in the newspaper; holds the sale and collects money from the highest bidder;
- Assists Tax Attorneys in serving Tax Warrants on businesses that do not pay taxes by either collecting the past due amount or seizing property to be sold in an auction;
- Serves other types of writs to the person or business listed on the writ; fills out related paperwork and returns to the Court;
- Posts election posting at designated areas during election season;
- Arrests and transport fugitives, prisoners, and inmates to various facilities;
- Transports inmates with infectious diseases;
- Coordinates travel in state and out of state with other law enforcement entities:
- Maintains and presents official and sensitive documents to travel authorities;
- Arranges and books travel arrangements, such as flights, hotels, and rental cars:
- Works closely with Brazoria County Crime Stoppers program which involves the flow of information used to be published in local papers for the apprehension of wanted absconders;
- Performs patrol duties by assisting with calls; attends accident scenes and writes traffic tickets;
- Routinely works with the Absconder Unit to execute criminal warrants;
- Demonstrate good physical condition sufficient to safely and properly perform essential duties through the Office’s physical testing protocols or other applicable physical examinations;
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION, REQUIREMENTS, AND TRAINING: -- the preferred way to obtain the minimum knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position are listed below. The County reserves the right to allow substitutions in the event that a candidate or incumbent exceeds requirements in one area but may be deficient in another.
FORMAL EDUCATION AND RELATABLE WORK EXPERIENCE-
- High School diploma, GED, or equivalent;
LICENSE & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Texas Driver’s License;
- Basic TCOLE Peace Officer certification;
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: -- to perform this position successfully, an individual(s) must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

- Communicate, both written and oral, to interact with a variety of people, from crime victims to suspects, and to accurately document and report incidents;
- Solve problems by analyzing situations to quickly and draw logical conclusions even in high-pressure or stressful situations;
- Use empathy and interpersonal skills to provide emotional support to victims of crimes, persons in crisis, and to interact with diverse populations;
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with judges, managers, supervisors, employees, external public agencies and organizations, attorneys, bonding companies and the general public.

Environmental Conditions: Duties and trainings are generally performed within Brazoria County in both indoor and outdoor environments. Occasionally, duties and trainings are performed outside Brazoria County. Exposure to extreme and stressful environmental conditions may include, but not limited to: Natural disasters; Manmade disasters; Exposure to toxic chemicals; Adverse weather conditions involving heat, cold, rain, wind, and ice; Exposure to bio-hazardous materials; Extreme driving conditions; High-voltage areas; Low-light to no light conditions; Bright light conditions; Smoky conditions; Areas containing dangerous and hostile person(s); Areas containing dangerous animals; Confined spaces; Areas in which heavy machinery may be operating; Roadways; Areas containing dangerous debris; Areas containing deceased animals and humans; Spaces not in compliant with local, state, and federal safety code and law regulations/laws.
Physical Demands: Certain physical abilities are required to ensure the essential functions of the position are able to be performed. These abilities may include, but not limited to: Walking, running, crawling, standing, sitting, jumping, kneeling, bending over, laying down for long periods of time; Discharge firearms; Operate a vehicle in normal and high-risk situations; Affect an arrest on combative/resistant person(s); Perform life-saving measures; Carry, push, pull, drag, or hold medium to heavy objects, including a person; Maintain rational decision making abilities in life-threatening and high-stress situations; Engage in high-stress and physically challenging training scenarios; Speak and hear in order to communicate effectively in person, through telephone, and through emergency radios.
