About the Department


This is responsible, specialized, technical, and supervisory work in the City’s Solid Waste Division. Work includes but is not limited to planning and directing the work of all field personnel performing solid waste collection duties. Extensive contact with both the public and other City staff. Must exercise initiative, decision making and independent judgement under the general direction of the Lead Solid Waste Coordinator, or designee as assigned by the Public Works Director/Assistant Director. Emphasis of work is to supervise operational work  to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of solid waste collection services.

Position Duties


The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification:

Plans, coordinates, schedules, assigns, supervises, and evaluates the work performed by crews performing solid waste collections.

Develops and is responsible for the execution of the operation’s work schedule. 

Coordinates the transportation of personnel, equipment, and materials to and from the job sites.

Assist’s in the development and implementation of employee trainings such as safety and cross training.

Assists in the hiring process.

Responds and resolves customer complaints (internal and external).  

Prepares employee performance evaluations in a timely manner.

Ensures compliance with the City personnel rules, department work rules, collective bargaining agreements, and other guidelines that might be applicable. 

Oversees the assignment, operation, maintenance and repairs of solid waste trucks and equipment. Responds to preventive maintenance schedule.

Conducts field inspections, reviews data/reports of activities, and use best management practices to evaluate and determine the effectiveness and efficiency of the operation.

Investigates work related incidents and accidents and submits appropriate reports, confers with the Human Resource Department and Risk Manager, and others to promote a safe work environment.

Performs administrative work as required, including running and reviewing reports, responding to emails, opening and closing work orders for service requests, and completing logs, forms, and other necessary documentation.

May be required to respond to non-routine situations on weekends and during emergency situations (Natural Disasters, Special events).

Assists with Special Projects.

Assists cross/inter- divisionally to ensure that overall departmental goals are met. 

Performs other related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications


High school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum five (5) years of experience in waste collection and disposal operations.

Two years (2) of supervisory experience required.

Associate Degree preferred. 

Must have a valid Class B Florida Commercial Driver’s License 

A comparable amount of training or work experience may be substituted for the minimum.
