Corrosion Technician
The starting pay rate for this position is $42.71 followed by an increase to $44.85 after successfully completing probation (typically, six months).
Our Corrosion Technicians at Colorado Springs Utilities are responsible for inspecting, installing, troubleshooting, and testing on galvanic and impressed current (rectified) cathodic protection systems related to gas pipelines, underground and above-ground storage tanks, high-voltage electric conduits, pump facilities, and plant facilities.
You will have the opportunity to design standard routine projects that are installed in areas of defined soil conditions and with predetermined lengths, sizes, and material types. You will also be responsible for maintaining and updating the corrosion database, developing monthly budgets for equipment and consumable items, reviewing and submitting survey reports, managing operation and maintenance data acquisition, tracking project statuses, and assigning follow-up work as required.
What Else Will You be Doing?
- Conducting corrosion surveys, such as annual, 10 percent, and soil resistivity testing
- Maintaining accurate and complete records in our databases (e.g., GIS, Maximo)
- Installing, inspecting, repairing, and analyzing pipeline, internal, and external tank coatings
- Ensuring proper maintenance of all applicable systems, including usability and reliability of equipment, instruments, and maps
- Assisting with cathodic protection and corrosion-related troubleshooting and design surveys
- Maintaining corrosion protection systems and cathodic protection rectifiers (120V/240V/480V AC)
- Troubleshooting cathodic protection system anomalies and scheduling and performing required repairs
- Testing cathodic protection systems using a variety of test methods (e.g., current requirements, "on/off surveys", depolarization tests, isolation/insulator tests, system continuity tests)
- Evaluating the likelihood and consequences of corrosion in various systems
- Reading, adjusting, modifying, installing, repairing, and replacing cathodic protection components
Who You Are
- Demonstrated experience in the construction, maintenance, and service of pipelines OR pipeline electronic instrument and control systems is valued
- Possession of a NACE/AMPP Cathodic Protection Tester (CP1) Certification, or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire is required
- Possession of a valid, unrestricted driver's license is required - this job requires operating Colorado Springs Utilities vehicles as an essential job function
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Exerts 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or 25-50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or 10-20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
- Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions and intense noises.
