General Summary:
The Shop at the Tenement Museum is a New York centric book and gift store. We have a wide range of specialty gifts and a wonderfully curated book selection. Our goal is to provide our customers with a great shopping experience that is complimented by our quality products and exemplary customer service. This is a three day/16-24 hour per week, non-except, position focusing on driving a culture of reading and book selling.
Responsibilities:
- Receiving Merchandise: Sign for shipments, create purchase orders, receiving vouchers, submit AP payment requests, and maintain departmental files, under the supervision of the Receiving & Receiving Manager. Identify and resolve shipping discrepancies, by calling vendors. Manage damage shipments and process credits. Prepare carts of merchandise to the sales floor and assist in placing merchandise.
- Inventory Management: In collaboration with the Manager, Retail Operations track sales of merchandise and take cycle counts throughout the year. Participate in the annual inventory.
- Merchandising: Work with retail leadership to set books and curate the store weekly. Have a strong sense of shop identity and editorial statement; able to place merchandise to support the themes and narratives present in the shop. Be knowledgeable in both the book and gift merchandise by being curious about the inventory and asking questions.
- Support the Visitor Engagement team: Act as a resource on product information as well as information about the Tenement Museum. Have broad understanding of museum programs and be able to talk about tours and programs. Be knowledgeable of the neighborhood and be able to make recommendations to visitors on restaurants and attractions.
- Exemplifying professional and ethical behavior; follow all Tenement Museum policy and procedures.
Actively participate in a culture of reading:
- A passion for reading and books, especially those related to New York History and im/migration. Must read 24+ books per year sold in the shop.
- Create a culture of selling by connecting tours, events, and books and spearhead curated events/ public programs book table
- Collaborate with the Manager to host bi-annual trainings on hand-selling with a focus on books, create cross-department training opportunities for staff to learn about books with different entry points
- Manage the 103 staff library and regularly add titles
- Send VC103 Staff new book tiles monthly & create tour connected merchandise menus
- Participate in creating targets, tracking, and reporting on daily/ monthly book sales
- Attend monthly staff & educator meetings
Job Qualifications:
- Aptitude for learning software.
- 1-2 years of experience in a retail store, previous knowledge of inventory control and retail system management a plus.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills. Detail-oriented person, with accuracy in record keeping is essential.
- This is a physically demanding position requiring frequent lifting and carrying of cartons and books. It also demands standing much of the time. Regular weekend and holiday hours required.
