Join our team in Pomona's Public Works Department! We currently have two part-time Maintenance Worker II openings in the O.A.T.H. (Officers Assisting the Homeless) program within the Public Services Division. Responsibilities include assisting crews with the removal and cleanup of encampments, handling and disposing of waste and biohazardous materials, and supporting the City’s efforts to improve public health, safety, and accessibility while respecting the rights of individuals experiencing homelessness.

This at-will, hourly position that averages 20 hours per week, with less than 1,000 hours annually.  Make sure your application is complete and highlights any relevant experience. Position Duties

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction and equipment operation work.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Knowledge of: Common tools and equipment used in maintenance work. 

Ability to: Understand and follow written and verbal instructions; read and write basic English; lift moderately heavy objects; learn the City's geography; work cooperatively and effectively with others; and possess excellent customer service skills. 

Skill to: Operate tools, equipment, and vehicles safely and efficiently.

Special Requirements: Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, push, pull, and lift up to 50 lbs; work is performed on City streets; exposure to inclement weather conditions, heat, traffic, noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards; and ability to travel to different sites and locations.

Minimum Qualifications

The following represents essential duties by job assignment. Assignments may be rotated within the Department based on organizational needs. 

When assigned to O.A.T.H. (Officers Assisting the Homeless) program: Clean-up transient encampments, collect abandoned property, and follow storage protocols. Remove abandoned camps, including clean-up of bio-hazards, human waste, syringes, litter, and other debris; power wash areas that are affected by transient encampments. Complete appropriate records and documentation.

When assigned to the Street Maintenance SectionPerform semi-skilled and skilled manual work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of City streets; grade, scrape, and level surfaces in preparation for road paving; assist in the repair of curbs, gutters, and manholes and the paving of streets and alleys using pneumatic tools, asphalt rakes, and other hand tools. Remove and replace road surface material and debris; load, transport, and unload stones, gravel, dirt, supplies, and equipment as required. Break up concrete or asphalt, build and set forms, and mix and pour cement for curbs, gutters, drains, culverts, sidewalks, and sidewalk ramps. Fill, patch, and resurface holes, cracks, and service laterals. Place traffic control and warning signs; serve as a flagman; set up lanterns and barricades. Operate tools, equipment, and vehicles; operate heavy equipment including loader, backhoe, and skip loader. Perform preventative maintenance procedures and minor maintenance and adjustments on equipment used. Fill, deliver, and place sand bags for residents. 

When assigned to Shopping Cart RetrievalCollect carts abandoned on public right-of-way and deliver to designated site. Track daily number of pickups; complete appropriate records and documentation. 

When assigned to Paint and Sign: Assist with Paint and Sign maintenance, tasks relating to the construction, maintenance, and repair of City Street-related signs and painting; and will assist in other areas of maintenance. Perform all duties relating to fabricating and erecting street signs. Operate sign making equipment; perform duties relating to street paint installation; operate street painting equipment. Lay out, fabricate, and install regulatory, guide, warning, and construction signs; straighten and reset street signs. Paint or stencil traffic directional markings including crosswalks, safety loading zones, bus stops, parking and center lines, and railroad and school crossings. Maintain, clean, and repair sign making and painting equipment

OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIES: Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to perform the following physical demands. Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, push, pull, and lift up to 50 lbs.: work is performed on City streets; exposure to inclement weather conditions, heat, traffic, noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations; availability for on-call, stand-by, and emergency call.

Work Hours: Up to 20 hours per week, not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year. Hours vary by assignment and will be based on the needs of the organization. Assignments may change or be reassigned as needed. Employees may also be required to work evenings and weekends, depending on program or site schedules.
