Position Overview:

The Director of Category Management is responsible for developing and executing multi-year strategies, sales plans, and budgets for assigned product categories, acting as the overall business owner with full P&L accountability. This leader will drive assortment optimization, supplier partnerships, private brand development, and innovation to deliver profitable growth. They will collaborate closely with finance, supply chain, marketing, and merchandising to ensure effective forecasting, supplier performance, and impactful go-to-market programs. Success in this role requires strong negotiation, entrepreneurial thinking, and the ability to influence across functions while balancing both short- and long-term business goals.

 

What you'll do:

  • Develop multi-year strategies and business plans for assigned categories, supported by initiatives that deliver both short- and long-term results.
  • Identify Preferred and Secondary suppliers, drive brand/SKU rationalization, and introduce new products, services, and innovations to strengthen the offering.
  • Execute product line reviews, evaluate supplier performance against scorecards, and lead improvement initiatives. Leverage supplier relationships to optimize assortment and ensure alignment with key support functions.
  • Operate as a business owner with an entrepreneurial approach—manage financial targets for the category with full P&L responsibility, including sales, gross margin, inventory turns, and EBITDA.
  • Establish product pricing guidelines in line with company strategy, ensuring accurate and competitive pricing in partnership with the pricing team.
  • Influence supplier strategy, oversee the supplier portfolio, and make key decisions on sourcing, developing, and negotiating with suppliers.
  • Partner with supply chain on forecasting and ensure adherence to supplier agreements, including pre-paid minimums, quantity breaks, and lead times.
  • Collaborate with merchandising teams and branches on the set-up of merchandising fixtures and products for new and existing programs.
  • Develop and execute private brand strategy to complement the good-better-best assortment approach.
  • Oversee the visual representation of product lines across all marketing channels, including catalogs, e-commerce, and promotional materials.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations, including import/export requirements.

Travel expectations:

  • This role will require overnight travel up to 25% of the time.
Skills We Are Seeking::
  • 7–8 years of product program negotiation experience required; 1–2 years in hardscapes buying/procurement strongly preferred.
  • Strong merchandising and pricing acumen, with the ability to identify, build, and optimize product assortments.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret data, translate strategy into action, and collaborate effectively across functions.
  • Experience managing, leading, and inspiring high-performing teams, providing both support and direction.
  • Willingness to engage in field work and maintain strong connections with customers and suppliers.
  • Knowledge of hardscape and landscape products preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
