Sous Chef, Common House Club (Unit Level Position)
Reports to: Chef de Cuisine (Unit Level)
Position Description
Common House is seeking a dedicated and motivated culinary professional to join our kitchen leadership team as a Sous Chef. The Sous Chef plays a critical role in supporting the Chef de Cuisine and Executive Chef in delivering a unique and elevated dining experience for members and guests across all Common House food and beverage outlets.
This role oversees daily kitchen operations, mentors and trains BOH staff, ensures compliance with health and sanitation standards, and contributes to menu execution, prep, and inventory processes. The Sous Chef is a hands-on leader in the kitchen, expediting food, supporting line operations, and maintaining the highest standards of hospitality and food quality.
Responsibilities
Culinary Operations & Menu Execution
- Ensure that all food served meets Common House standards of taste, presentation, and timeliness.
- Work closely with line cooks, prep cooks, and dishwashers to ensure seamless service and consistent food quality.
- Support menu development by testing recipes, giving feedback, and ensuring proper execution of seasonal menus, specials, and events.
- Maintain accurate prep lists, portion controls, and yield/waste management systems.
Maintenance & Compliance
- Ensure cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of kitchen equipment, storage areas, and workspaces.
- Oversee compliance with all local Health Department requirements and internal food safety protocols.
- Assist in scheduling and overseeing regular cleaning and preventative maintenance.
Team Leadership & People Management
- Act as a leader and role model for the BOH team, promoting a positive, educational, and collaborative work environment.
- Provide coaching, training, and constructive feedback to culinary staff.
- Support the Chef de Cuisine with scheduling, hiring, onboarding, and performance management of BOH employees.
- Step in as acting kitchen lead in the absence of the Chef de Cuisine.
Interdepartmental Collaboration
- Work closely with FOH leaders, event managers, and other departments to ensure seamless execution of daily service, private events, and member programming.
- Participate in weekly culinary and operations meetings, contributing updates and feedback.
Administrative Support
- Assist the Chef de Cuisine with inventory, ordering, and vendor relations.
- Contribute to reporting on food costs, labor management, and operational performance.
Experience Requirements
- At least 3–5 years of progressive kitchen experience, with 1+ years in a leadership role.
- At least 1-2 years of baking or pastry experience
- ServSafe or equivalent Food Safety certification.
- Proven ability to lead a team in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
- Strong knowledge of culinary techniques, kitchen operations, and food safety compliance.
- Experience in both à la carte and banquet preparation preferred, ideally in a club, restaurant, or hotel setting.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to stand for extended periods, bend, lift up to 50 pounds, and perform repetitive hand and arm movements.
