About the Department

Under general supervision, the purpose of this position is to provide maintenance and repair of municipal utility systems which includes water, wastewater, and reclaimed water system.  General and special assignments are received from the utilities Operations Manager and work is carried out with moderate independent judgment in selecting work methods and procedures, subject to departmental rules and regulations. 
 
 
 
 
 

Position Duties

Conducts inspection, installation, maintenance, and repairs of water mains, water meters, manholes, sewer lines, and other related facilities.
 
Flushes and maintains City fire hydrants.
 
Operates vacuum sewer system as assigned.
 
Locates and repairs underground utility lines. 
 
Ensures all work with compliant with city, state, and federal regulations.
 
Responds to complaints and other inquiries from the public.
 
Completes malfunction reports on any water breaks or sewer overflows that meet the Department of Environmental Protection criteria.

Serves on call for emergencies 24 hours a day.
 
 
ADDITIONAL POSITION FUNCTIONS  
 
Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
 

Minimum Qualifications

High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college in water system maintenance and repair or closely related field; supplemented by two (2) years' experience in water and sewer lines construction and maintenance or closely related experience. 
 
Must possess and maintain a Florida Department of Environmental Protection Level 3 or higher Water Distribution System Operator License and a Class C or higher Florida Water and Pollution Control Operators Association Wastewater Collection Certification. Employee without said license/certification will be allowed one year and six months (1.5 years) from the date of employment with the City of Sanford to attain this license/certification. 
 
Must possess and maintain a Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License.
 
Employee shall obtain the National Incident Management System ICS-100 Introduction to the Incident Command System and IS-700 National Incident Management System, An Introduction within six (6) months of employment. The following courses are designed to provide a baseline, as they introduce basic NIMS and ICS concepts and provide the foundation for higher-level Emergency Operations Center- (EOC), MACS, and ICS related training.
 

Other Qualifications

Knowledge of water, wastewater, and the reclaim water system construction, maintenance, repair practices and procedures.
 
Knowledge of/ and skill in the use of tools, equipment, and materials used in the water, wastewater, and reclaim water construction, maintenance, and repair.
 
Considerable knowledge of the hazards and dangers in Utility system work and ability to adhere to safety standards and safe operating procedures.
 
Ability to read and work from construction plans.
 
Ability to relate to the public in a manner conducive to maintaining and enhancing the image and reputation of the city.
 
Must be able to conform with all state and government regulations pertaining to the utility system.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
 
While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
 
While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally required to push and/or pull over 100 pounds.
 
While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals, work near moving mechanical parts, and risk of electrical shock.
