About the Department
Supervises crew members and performs the duties of a Journeyman Wireman. Constructs and maintains the underground power distribution and sub-transmission systems. Reports directly to the General Foreman of Underground.
Position Duties
- Supervises underground crew members and performs the duties of a Journeyman Wireman.
- Responsible for proper construction and maintenance of transmission and distribution underground lines and equipment, including but not limited to assigning job duties, organizing work processes, and explaining work requirements, methods, and possible solutions to problems.
- Furnishes detailed instructions, advice, and guidance to personnel.
- Reviews work in progress for quality of work and to maintain a work schedule.
- Motivates employees for greater productivity.
- Supervises the training of new employees.
- Executes Department policies and directives.
- Informs General Foreman of Underground of areas where corrective action is needed to maintain good service.
- Completes daily time sheets for crew personnel and other pertinent records, such as mileage reports and order requests for transformer and meter installations and removals.
- Promotes and follows up on the Department's safety program and the safety of the general public.
- Defines, locates, isolates, and repairs trouble or problems with substations, underground installations, and traffic light systems.
- Makes repairs to overhead lines during emergencies, including climbing and working from poles.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or GED certificate.
- Successful completion of an electrical apprentice school approved by the department.
- Five (5) years' experience preferred as a Journeyman Wireman with an electric utility.
- Current and valid unrestricted Class A Commercial driver's license.
Other Qualifications
- Ability to supervise, train, and direct crew members.
- Thorough knowledge of the breakdown of materials required for the construction and maintenance of an underground power system and substations.
- Thorough knowledge and ability to operate and maintain the Department's electrical system, including substations, main feeders, and underground system.
- Knowledge and skills necessary to operate fault locator, line locator, and interference locating equipment.
- Ability to correctly read all electrical metering devices.
- Thorough knowledge and ability to analyze test data on soil samples and determine the usability of oil.
- Knowledge and ability to operate electrical testing equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the Department's rules, regulations, and guidelines relating to construction, maintenance, and service.
- Ability to coordinate work with other crews and sections of the Department.
- Ability to work on high voltage lines, including energized lines.
- Ability to read prints and do complicated wiring, including a SCADA System, traffic controls, breakers, and regulator controls.
- Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to write legibly.
- Possess good public and employee relations skills and respect customers' property.
- Must be able to work overtime and be available for emergency work and standby duty.
- Must reside within 30 miles of the Electricity Department Warehouse.
Physical Demands (with or without reasonable accommodation):
- Must be able to walk, stoop, bend, dig, climb, and lift up to 100 lbs.
- Must be able to withstand extreme weather conditions for long periods.
- Must be able to climb poles and other structures and work at extreme heights.
All hand tools, vehicles, and equipment required for wireman work; two-way radio.
