The approximate base compensation range is posted, but the actual offer will reflect our total compensation and benefits package. The offer will be determined by a number of factors including the selected candidate’s experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, FTE, number of months worked, as well as internal equity among our team.
 


Job Summary:

This is a twelve (12) month Residential Life position. Under the responsibility of the Director of Residential Life, the Area Coordinator is responsible for the overall operation of on-campus residential areas (approximately 800 students). The Area Coordinator is a professional staff member who provides support and leadership to residential students.


The Area Coordinator position supervises student staff, guides residents, facilitates relationships,  manages day-to-day operations for eight buildings, and performs administrative tasks to facilitate the development of an effective on-campus living community.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in social sciences, business management, or related field; AND two (2) years of professional academic, student development, program planning, and management experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is required.

  • One to two (1-2) years of related experience in college or university-operated residence halls, summer conferencing, or professional college student programming.

  • Ability to foster a healthy and safe living-learning environment

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, when necessary

  • Ability to build rapport with a diverse array of students.

  • Ability to take initiative, and work independently to carry out multiple responsibilities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in Student Affairs or a related area is preferred.

Key Responsibilities: Three areas of responsibility

Student Development and Support:

  • Actively seek to become acquainted with and support residential students by attending hall activities and campus events throughout the academic year and being a visible, approachable, and accessible on-campus professional staff presence.

  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of RA programming and community engagement activities

  • Effectively establish rapport, build relationships, and mentor a diverse student body while serving as a positive role model for students.

  • Demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to students’ emotional, personal, behavioral, and academic needs; Provide support, guidance, and appropriate referrals.

  • Manage in a crisis situation and diffuse conflicts, including attending to the health and safety of residents in medical, psychological, and crises/emergencies.

  • Support the residential curriculum by creating learning activity guidance and training for RAs to achieve Residential Life’s educational goals and learning outcomes for residents.

  • With a student-centered approach, assist with retention efforts and resident outreach in collaboration with the CARE Team. 

  • Support the growth and development of residents in learning to engage well in our diverse community and develop healthy relationships and lines of communication with their roommates and neighbors.

  • Assist students in supporting roommate communication and relationship development. Managing roommate relations, including mediations and approving and facilitating room changes, if warranted.

  • Read, understand, and explain policies and procedures 

    • Be fair and consistent in the enforcement of policies and procedures

    • Occasionally, conduct investigations and disciplinary hearings.

 Supervising:

  • Supervise, coach, and evaluate a student staff of approximately 20 Resident Advisors (RAs). 

  • As part of the professional staff team, recruit, select, and train RA staff.

  • Develop and support student staff through best practices of motivation and accountability to guide each individual RA to develop leadership skills and grow in the position

  • Hold weekly area staff meetings. 

  • Hold weekly/bi-weekly individual meetings with RA staff members.

  • Review RA duty logs on a daily basis.

  • Coordinate duty schedule for assigned on-campus residence halls, and ensure staff meet on-call expectations.

  • Plan and implement RA training programs

  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality and privacy

Administrative:

  • Maintain clear, effective oral and written communication with the Director of Residential Life, students, parents, and other campus departments in a timely manner in person, by phone, and by email.

    • Manages Google CSS  calendar and email in a timely and accurate manner.

    • Attend meetings and participate in ResLife staff meetings. 

  • Maintain an environment within the residential facilities that is conducive to living and learning, with special attention to health, safety, and inclusion.

    • Manage Room Condition Reporting process, including initial documentation of room conditions, assisting with the move-out process, assessment of damages, billing coordination, and appeal request consideration process.

    • Coordinate Health, Maintenance, and Safety Inspections in each room several times each semester.

  • Meet and enforce deadlines to ensure smooth operations

  • Oversee budgets for designated RAs, manage purchasing card, and reconcile monthly statements.

  • Facilitate and track programming in the residence halls, including gathering appropriate data for assessment.

    • Assist in compiling and recording overall assessment data.

    • Organize and facilitate, with RA staff, one campus-wide event a year with the apartment RAs and one with the Somers RAs.

  • Assist with room selection process and assist with occupancy management.

    • Supervises and directs the staff in the opening and closing of housing at all breaks; assists as necessary with administrative tasks in this area. 

  • Work independently to plan, prioritize, schedule, and coordinate activities.

  • Other duties as assigned

    • Serve on departmental, divisional, and campus-wide committees and complete administrative tasks and projects as assigned.

    • Assist with special events such as Orientation, Admissions Open House events, campus traditions, and large campus events.
