About the Department

The Network Engineer II is responsible for supporting, implementing, and maintaining enterprise network infrastructure to ensure reliable, secure, and efficient connectivity across the organization. This role involves configuring and troubleshooting routers, switches, wireless systems, data center environments, VoIP services and related technologies, while assisting in network upgrades, monitoring, and performance optimization. The Network Engineer II collaborates with cross-functional IT teams to resolve complex technical issues, implement best practices, and contribute to projects that enhance network availability and security. The position requires strong analytical skills, the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and a commitment to maintaining a resilient and scalable network environment.

Schedule: M-F 8am-5pm. (On-call rotation participation)

Position Duties

Designs, develops, and configures local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), communications networks and other networks and equipment: ensures compliance with applicable policies, procedures, and rules; conducts site survey and workflow analysis to better utilize departmental resources; works with users to plan appropriate locations for network, and telephone equipment; determines facility modifications necessary to appropriately locate equipment; prepares user site plans for installations; and submits requests for necessary facility modifications such as cable routing, electrical outlets, cooling, and special requirements.

Installs, maintains, and repairs local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN), telephone networks and other information systems networks: utilizes current County technologies and a variety of procedures, protocols, and wireless communication bridges; utilizes the internet and downloads files, software patches and updates to correct file servers and nodes; assembles network hardware; establishes port connections for new equipment to network as needed; and installs and maintains LAN to LAN, WAN to WAN, and WAN to LAN and voice communications and connections.

Troubleshoots end-user problems: responds to initial on-site requests for assistance and resolves problems; performs troubleshooting analysis of servers, workstations and associated systems; resolves and documents network problems; escalates problem to vendors or other personnel as appropriate; ensures continual operations of customers' networks and equipment; and utilizes diagnostic tools and other resources as appropriate.

Monitors service levels of hardware, software, telephony and other network equipment: collects, analyzes and manages performance and capacity data; analyzes system use; identifies trends to prevent system disruptions and downtime; provides reports on average, peak, and guideline values for performance elements to track resource use; and determines necessary changes to hardware and/or software resources to enhance overall system operations; and makes appropriate recommendations.

Performs backups and virus protection and maintains firewalls: develops and installs data retrieval system for retrieval and emergency systems; manages user accounts, permissions, email, anti-virus, and anti-spam programs; controls access to the network; updates security programs and performs frequent changing of passwords; and installs security programs to prevent unauthorized access to privileged data and information.

May provide lead guidance, direction, and training to other Network Engineers: leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned co-workers; confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co-workers; assists with complex/problem situations; provides technical expertise; and assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment.

Maintains an awareness of new applications, technologies, technical methods, trends, and advances in the profession: reviews professional publications, technical manuals, and websites to increase knowledge of network operations; and attends conferences, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science , or related field required; supplemented by three years of progressively responsible experience in network engineering; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Understanding of networks, including LAN/WAN, TCP/IP, OSPF, and QoS.
  • 3+ years of experience configuring and supporting enterprise routers and switches in an enterprise environment.
  • Configuration and troubleshooting experience of Cisco routers/switches: 4400, 8300, and 8500 series routers, 9200, 9300, and 9500 series switches.
  • Experience managing enterprise wireless networks using Cisco Meraki or comparable cloud-managed wireless platforms.
  • Experience with Cisco collaboration solutions (CUCM, UCCX, Webex, Webex Contact Center) or comparable enterprise collaboration/VoIP platforms.
  • Experience supporting data center architectures, including Cisco Nexus devices and Nexus Dashboard Fabric Controller (NDFC), or equivalent enterprise-class switching and fabric management solutions.
  • Experience with traffic management networks is preferred but not required.

Minimum Qualifications

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Other Qualifications

Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors

Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
