Principal Engineer - R&D
What you will do
The Principal Engineer is a product development engineering role that will report to Engineering Manager within Special Hazards R&D. You will be developing fire protection equipment for a variety of applications and industries. As a Principal Engineer you will be the lead engineer and follow a defined stage-gate process to develop innovative solutions for new or improved products. You will interface with many internal functional departments and external resources as required for product development from project idea phase to product launch.
How you will do it
- Create detailed product functional specifications using the inputs from sales, product management, and the voice of the customer.
- Determine timelines and budgets for completion of engineering tasks within the product development process.
- Develop product design concepts, lead prototype generation, and coordinate design and product verification testing.
- Evaluates and approves design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.
- Work with third party approval agencies to develop and execute testing programs to obtain the required approvals.
- Communicate with program management/Stakeholders to identify roadblocks and mitigation plans to maintain schedule and budget commitments.
What we look for
Required
- Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- 12+ years’ experience in fire suppression product design and development.
- Expert knowledge of fire suppression products, applications, and regulatory requirements.
- Experience in working with agencies for fire suppression products approvals.
- Understanding of fire suppression codes and standards of various regions.
- Support Fit to market requirements.
- Demonstrated team leadership skills, coaches' others toward positive outcomes, and is considered a role model.
- Proven project management and organizational skills in a cross-functional team environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and decision-making ability.
- Effective and professional communication with the ability to write reports and convey detailed technical information.
- Deep understanding of fundamental engineering theories, mathematics, mechanics, and physical science concepts to the job.
- Ability to perform root cause analysis and corrective actions on high complexity problems.
Preferred
- Experience with a stage-gate product development process.
- Understanding of process methods and tools such as DFMEA, DVP&R, DOE, risk analysis.
- Ability for occasional travel.
- Proficiency of MSOffice, MS Project, PTC Creo and Windchill.
