Job Summary:

Under the direction of the operation’s leadership, the Dining Associate III is responsible for providing superior guest service. Tasks will be performed in a quick and efficient manner, such as greeting customers, collecting payment, preparing and assembling food and beverage orders. Safeguards company, customer, and campus assets, including keys and safe codes. Provides training and guidance to other student employees. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Obtains assigned service stations from supervisor at the start of the work shift
  • Sets the pace for their scheduled shift within the operation; with provided standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Assists leadership team in clerical duties, including inventory management, invoice processing, and audits
  • Assists leadership team in training and guiding other student employees
  • Assists leadership team in special orders, projects, marketing, and event planning
  • Manages waste & temperature logs throughout the duration of their shift
  • Greets customers, takes their order, collects payment, and makes change
  • Demonstrate knowledge of menu items, allergen information, and offerings
  • Follow alcohol serving guidelines as described by the California alcohol beverage control and campus regulations where alcohol is served
  • Follow established branded concept guidelines where applicable
  • Merchandise retail items on the sales floor in an aesthetically pleasing manner
  • Assists manager in ordering product and working with outside vendors
  • Receive, verify, sort, and stock supplies
  • Maintains the cleanliness and sanitation of the front-of-house guest dining area and back-of-house kitchen area. Tasks may include bussing and cleaning tables, beverage stations, resetting vacant tables, maintaining restroom supplies, maintaining napkin dispensers and condiment stations, operating dishwasher, mopping, and emptying trash
  • Adheres to campus and company sustainability initiatives 
  • Cross-train and work in all areas of the operation as needed
  • May prepare and serve food & beverages such as drip coffee, espresso-based drinks, tea and other specialty drinks, depending on assigned work station
  • May handle animal and vegetable proteins through various stages of cooking
  • Responsible for opening and closing duties for the assigned location
  • Complies with all health and safety regulations of the Health Department and OSHA.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the job.

Qualifications:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Must have 2 years of prior experience in a commercial kitchen, with at least 1 semester at the Beach Shops
  • Must be a current and active CSULB student.
  • Ability to perform complex tasks without detailed supervision
  • Ability to open/close locations when applicable
  • Must be able to perform simple mathematical calculations. 
  • California Food Handler Card OR the ability to obtain the CA Food Handler Card within the first 30 days of employment. 
  • Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) OR the ability to obtain the RBS within the first 30 days of employment
  • Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and must be customer service oriented.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions regarding safety procedures.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment

Physical Demands:

The employee must frequently be able to stand and exert well-paced mobility throughout the entire shift. The employee must frequently be able to use manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination (for use of food service equipment). The employee must frequently be able to lift and/or move a minimum of 50 pounds and frequently use upper body strength required for mixing and carrying pots and pans. There will be long periods of time standing on their feet and moving around and the employee will be occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, bend at the waist, push or pull, reach above shoulder level, stoop, and kneel. The employee must comply with the University’s rules and regulations as well as the Beach Shops.

Work Environment:

The employee is regularly in a traditional dining services and kitchen environment that is frequently busy, has tight work-spaces, and extreme temperatures ranging from climate-controlled in the dining room, to humid/hot climate in the kitchen area; and occasionally outdoors depending on assigned location. Cold temperatures are exposed in refrigeration area. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. The employee is regularly susceptible to oven, grill, knives, blenders and other cutlery utensils. Works with chemicals used in cleaning and sanitizing equipment and all kitchen areas.
