About the Department

Are you a highly organized and detail-oriented professional with a passion for community development? Do you thrive on collaboration and problem-solving? The City of Milwaukie is looking for a Development Services Coordinator to lead our permitting operations and help shape the future of our city!

As the Development Services Coordinator, you'll be responsible for overseeing the entire development services process, from initial building permit applications to final issuance. This position is more comprehensive than a Permit Coordinator role, as it includes broader responsibilities, operational oversight, and participation in policy development.

You'll act as a crucial link between various city departments—including Planning, Engineering, Building, and Public Works—and external stakeholders like developers and contractors. You will also be the administrator for the city's permit tracking system, helping to implement and optimize our Accela permitting system by managing the building module and leading the rollout of new modules for other departments.

Position Duties

What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead Permitting Operations: Manage and supervise the entire permit application process, from reviewing applications for completeness and accuracy to calculating fees and routing them to the right people. You’ll also provide guidance and training to your team.

  • Optimize and Innovate: You'll be the administrator for our permit tracking system, keeping all the data accurate and up to date. You’ll use that data to support decision-making and identify trends. This role also involves participating in policy and procedure evaluation to enhance efficiency and customer satisfaction.

  • Solve Problems and Serve the Public: Help resolve complaints and problems related to building construction and code compliance. You'll also provide clear explanations of City development codes, zoning, and land use to the public.

  • Be a Key Collaborator: Serve as the crucial link between various departments—including planning, engineering, building, and public works—to ensure a timely and coordinated review process. You'll also work closely with developers, contractors, and other stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications

Are You the Right Fit?

We're looking for someone who has either:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent,

ICC certification as a Permit Technician, and at least five years of experience in a community development, public works, or related department.

OR

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field like project management or urban development, along with one year of experience in a related department.

You should have considerable knowledge of both manual and computerized record keeping and be proficient with programs like Word and Excel. Most importantly, you should have a Public Service Mindset, excellent communication skills, and the ability to solve problems with strategic agility.

Other Qualifications

First review of applications will be on Monday, September 22. Depending on the application pool, the position may close as soon as this date.
