Other Conditions: The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa (UHM), College of Engineering, Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering, invites applications for a full-time, general fund, tenure track faculty position, pending position clearance and availability of funds to begin approximately August 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.


The successful candidate will have access to a well-equipped geotechnical testing laboratory, along with associated machine shop facilities. Available computer facilities are extensive, including access to the Maui High-Performance Computing Center and state-of-the-art multimedia computer instructional laboratories.


The University of Hawai‘i is a Carnegie R1 doctoral university with a strong emphasis on research and graduate education. The Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, and its undergraduate program is ABET accredited. Current enrollment in the Civil Engineering program is approximately 400 undergraduate and 65 graduate students. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in geotechnical engineering and related civil engineering courses including engineering mechanics; developing and teaching advanced courses in one or more of the following areas: earthquake geotechnical engineering; soil dynamics, engineering seismology; marine and coastal geotechnics; resilience and sustainability of urban systems and infrastructure; remote sensing using land, airborne or satellite sensors; virtual and augmented reality; digital twin applications in geotechnical engineering; or other emerging geotechnical topics. Teaching via various distance delivery modes may be required.

  • Serving as chair or member of committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees. 

  •  Participating in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods.

  • Supervising independent study activities.

  • Serving as academic advisor to students.

  • Serving on departmental, college, and university committees.

  • Develop an externally funded research program that leads to publication in leading scholarly journals. Research topics could include earthquake geotechnical engineering; soil dynamics, engineering seismology; marine and coastal geotechnics, energy geotechnics, resilience and sustainability of urban systems and infrastructure, remote sensing using land, airborne or satellite sensors, virtual and augmented reality, digital twin applications in geotechnical engineering, or other emerging geotechnical topics.

  • Conducting and publishing research work in leading scholarly journals as a record of scholarly activity.

  • Rendering service to the professional or lay community which is relevant to the individual’s academic specialty.

  • Participate in University activities intended to develop and cultivate a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning.

  • Performing related tasks as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • An earned Ph.D. (“All but dissertation” will be considered; degree must be earned before date of hire) in civil engineering, geology/geophysics, or a closely related field from a university of recognized standing.
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching excellence and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Demonstrated scholarly achievement, evidenced by a track record of conducting research and publishing scholarly materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach graduate courses in area of specialty, as well as undergraduate courses in civil engineering.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage successfully in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Expertise in emerging research areas related to geotechnical engineering that leads to establishing an extramurally funded research program
  • Licensed as a professional engineer (PE)
  • Post-disaster reconnaissance experience
  • Design office or consulting experience
  • Field experience on construction sites
  • Research emphasis applicable to or experience with Hawai‘i and/or the Asian/Pacific region
