Description

Job Summary


Performs medical laboratory tests and procedures, and analyzes in all functional sections or designated specialty area of the lab to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Reports test results, evaluates quality, and troubleshoots systems and equipment. Maintains records of performance, quality control, remedial action plans, quality improvements and procedure manuals.

 

 

Job Responsibilities

Other duties may be assigned.

Provides patient education.

Performs specimen collection as necessary in accordance with established protocols.

Demonstrates age-specific competencies (newborn through geriatric)

Performs diagnostic tests and operates equipment according to established protocols.

Performs routine preventative maintenance and calibration of assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedures.

Adheres to Laboratory safety protocols.

Initiates corrective action related to quality control and instrument performance.

Manages time effectively, organizing and prioritizing to meet established service expectations.

Documents malfunction, repairs, replacement, or maintenance of equipment.

Contributes to systems redesign, operations improvement, and workflow efficiency.

Promotes customer relations in all interactions and collaborates with others to improve service delivery.

Incorporates the principals of quality control and performance improvement into daily operational activities; assesses specimen integrity, labelling, and test results.

Maintains confidentiality.

Stays abreast of regulatory requirements and implements change as necessary to ensure ongoing compliance.

Performs training, orientation, and competency assessments.

Drafts policies and procedures; provides for record retention.

Assists with selection and implementation of new equipment, methods and procedures.

Builds, maintains, updates, and integrates Laboratory Information Systems modules.

Manages supply and blood inventory

Displays competency for the Medical Technologist role as evidenced in the annual performance appraisal following the FHN PRIDE Standards.

Qualifications


Requirements

Education:  Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or in a life/biological science (biology, biochemistry, microbiology, etc.) from a program that is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), the commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).
 

Licensure/Certification/Registration:  Registration or Certification (or eligible) from one of the following National credentialing agencies: American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS formally HEW), American Medical Technologists (AMT).
