What We Do
We are the first publicly-traded biotech or pharmaceutical company to take the form of a public benefit corporation. Our public benefit purpose is to provide a brighter future for patients through the development of novel pharmaceutical therapies; and technologies that expand the availability of transplantable organs.
United Therapeutics (Nasdaq: UTHR) seeks to travel down the corridors of indifference to develop treatments for rare, deadly diseases. We were founded in 1996 by a family seeking a cure for their daughter’s pulmonary arterial hypertension( PAH). Today, we have six FDA-approved therapies that treat PAH, pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD) and neuroblastoma, a rare pediatric cancer. Our near-term pipeline seeks to develop additional therapies for PAH and pulmonary fibrosis (PF).
The cure for end-stage life-threatening diseases like PAH, PH-ILD, PF, and many others is an organ transplant, but only a small percentage of donated organs are available to address the vast need. For this reason, we are working to create bio-artificial organs to address the shortage of kidneys, hearts, lungs, and livers available for transplant. We believe an unlimited supply of tolerable, transplantable organs will eliminate the transplant waiting list and cure end-stage organ diseases for which transplant is not currently an option.
How you’ll contribute
UT's IVIVA Medical is building human scale renal therapeutic devices. In this role as a Spring 2026 Co-op, you will assist in the development and understanding of the vascular contribution to engineered kidney tissue. This coop will be 6 months in length, fully onsite 40 hours a week beginning in January of 26. We are seeking only highly self motivated, strong communicators (written/verbal) with excellent teamwork skills for this opportunity.
- Work with the other scientists in the IVIVA team to understand and advance the function of vascularized engineered kidney tissue.
- Coordinate and communicate ideas and results in collaboration with the cell biology and engineering teams.
Example projects could include:
- Propose and carry out experimentation to test interventions in whole tissue or in cell culture to increase the physiological effectiveness of the engineered tissue.
- Culture renal constructs vascularized with iPSc derived endothelium and perform assessment of in situ endothelial function
- Culture and examine interventions in static cultures to mature the phenotype of iPSc derived endothelial cells, then translate findings to experiments in multicellular perfused tissue cultures.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Candidates are expected to be actively enrolled in a Master's or PhD program in a science/engineering discipline
- Available to work 40 hours/week onsite in Medford, MA for the duration of the co-op
- Coursework in the concepts in vascular physiology, developmental biology, or vascular tissue engineering.
- Experience in cell culture, preferably with iPS cells or iPS derived differentiated cells.
- Mastery of cell biology techniques such as Western blotting, qPCR, Immunostaining and imaging.
