About the Role

We’re seeking an enthusiastic and commercially minded Executive Editor with a passion for books, tech and innovation to join the Apress team. You’ll lead a small team of acquisitions editors while also driving the growth of our publishing program in the dynamic field of FinTech and AI for Finance, by managing your own portfolio in that area. An entrepreneurial mindset and the ability to quickly respond to change are key!

Role Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of four to six acquisitions editors and support and advise them in their day-to-day work, so that individual and group KPIs are met
  • Champion a data-driven culture and support the implementation of new policies, processes, workflows, and systems as applicable
  • Be creative, and encourage own team to be creative, in using all available methods for book acquisition, including creative use of tools and systems at your disposal such as social media and AI-driven tools.
  • Foster a positive and energetic team environment
  • Partnering with the head of the Publishing Unit, set performance, development, and acquisition goals for the team, and help set overall strategic direction for Apress
  • Acquire and publish approximately 25 titles per year in line in the area of FinTech with the overall content strategy for the Apress imprint.
  • Work with authors and with internal support colleagues to ensure timely delivery of book manuscripts
  • Monitor the timely delivery of book manuscripts with direct reports
  • Develop a network of industry advisors and technical reviewers who can be called upon for advice concerning your program as well as review manuscripts when required.
  • Travel to relevant conferences and industry events on behalf of Apress, when required, to aid acquisitions and networking opportunities or to support and train team members.
  • Maintain continuous cooperation and dialogue with wider Springer Nature colleagues in our Sales, Rights& Permissions and Production departments concerning individual projects and company-wide initiatives.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

Essential

  • A bachelor’s degree or master’s degree
  • A strong drive to meet targets and drive commercial success
  • Experience with strategic decision-making, market analysis, and portfolio growth
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills - the ability to facilitate connections between people
  • A natural interest in the tech industry, and in keeping abreast of current developments within this fast-moving industry.
  • Monitor staff well-being and address challenges proactively
  • Expand content acquisition, commissioning, and retention while ensuring a best-in-class author experience
  • Establish and track KPIs, ensuring a data-driven approach to portfolio management and taking action when needed
  • Proven relevant publishing experience, preferably in an acquisition’s capacity. Candidates with a background in a related field, like journalism, communications, marketing, or a related tech field will be considered.
  • Candidates currently in a senior-level capacity who are ready to take the next step into management are encouraged to apply

Desirable                           

  • Experience in people management and/or leading teams is highly desirable
  • Experience in trade publishing is a plus
  • Degree in an STM field is helpful
